Would Have Done: -হেঁতেন

Level 5Sounds Like hēm̐tēna

ক’লোঁহেঁতেন means “I would have said”.

How It Works

The past ending shows who does the action, and -হেঁতেন follows it. An “if” clause with -লে or যদি often comes before.

তুমি-লাহেঁতেনপালাহেঁতেন “you would have caught it”
তই-লিহেঁতেনপালিহেঁতেন “you would have got to see”
আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি-লেহেঁতেননকৰিলেহেঁতেন “would not have done”

For সি and তেওঁ, verbs such as হ’ল and গ’ল take -ল in place of -লে, as in the plain third-person past: তেওঁ আজি ইয়াত থাকিলে বহুত সুখী হ’লহেঁতেন “if he were here today, he would have been very happy”.

The same ending also carries a wish about the present: মই যদি ডেকা হ’লোঁহেঁতেন “if only I were young” (a woman says গাভৰু in place of ডেকা), and for what you would do in someone else’s place: মই তোমাৰ ঠাইত হ’লে অলপ ৰৈ থাকিলোঁহেঁতেন “if I were you, I would wait a little”.
