Assamese has three ways to say “you”: আপুনি for people you do not know well, তুমি for friends and family, and তই for children, younger family and very close friends.

The verb also changes with তই. The next row shows how.

A parent or an older person can use তই with a small child or a younger family member, and very close friends can use it with each other. Do not use it with a teacher, an elder or someone you have just met.
