Reporting What Others Say
বুলি কৈছে and বুলি ক’লে report what others say: আমাৰ শিক্ষকে কাইলৈ পৰীক্ষা হ’ব বুলি কৈছে “our teacher says there will be an exam tomorrow”.
How It Works
The two verbs differ in time. কৈছে is the present perfect and fits a view that is on record. ক’লে is the past and fits something said once.
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| বুলি কৈছে | a view on record | ডাক্তৰে মোক প্ৰতিদিনে এঘণ্টা খোজ কাঢ়িব লাগে বুলি কৈছে “the doctor says I must walk for an hour every day” |
| বুলি ক’লে | something said once | নাজমাই মোক বিকাশ কাইলৈ নাহে বুলি ক’লে “Nazma told me that Bikash is not coming tomorrow” |
A person who is told takes -ক: মোক “to me”. The speaker can be a group of people too, as in কিছুমানে সভাখন নগাঁৱত আৰু কিছুমানে তেজপুৰত বুলি কৈছে “some say the meeting is in Nagaon and some say in Tezpur”. When the sentence is about a vote or a poll, the speaker is a group with -এ: বেছিভাগ লোকে হয় বুলি ক’লে “most of the people said yes”.
Be careful with the form বুলি ক’লে. The ending -লে can also mean “if”, so X বুলি ক’লে can mean “if you say X”. In অসমীয়া খাদ্য বুলি ক’লে ভাত, মাছ, পিঠা আদি বুজা যায় “if we say Assamese food, we mean rice, fish, pitha and the like”, nobody is being quoted.
