-تے ہوئے
While Doing Something
Connect an accompanying activity to the main action.
How It Works
This phrase describes how or when the main event unfolds. The main verb supplies tense, person and the agreement needed by its own construction.
In the examples here, one participant performs both activities. Make that participant clear so the listener does not attach the phrase to the wrong person.
A phrase describing a noun directly has a different agreement pattern: مسکراتی ہوئی لڑکی identifies a smiling girl. Some speakers also use agreeing participles adverbially; the -تے ہوئے pattern taught here does not require feminine agreement.
Examples (4)
- وہ مسکراتے ہوئے بولی۔
She spoke while smiling.
The feminine main verb does not require the adverbial phrase to become feminine.
- میں کپڑے تہ کرتے ہوئے موسیقی سنتا ہوں۔
I listen to music while folding clothes.
The masculine speaker performs both activities.
- مریم راستے میں چلتے ہوئے فون پر بات کر رہی تھی۔
Maryam was talking on the phone while walking along the road.
The walking phrase accompanies the past ongoing conversation.
- ہم باغ سے گزرتے ہوئے پھول دیکھتے ہیں۔
We look at the flowers as we pass through the garden.
The phrase supplies the setting for the main activity.
