Turning a Quality into an Abstract Noun

Level 6

بچہ → بچپن; سادہ → سادگی.

How It Works

پن can form a noun naming a quality or condition. بچپن names childhood; بڑاپن can describe generosity of spirit or maturity. The resulting meaning is more specific than simply adding “-ness” in English.

In pairs such as سادہ and سادگی, the final ہ is replaced by گی. تازہ and تازگی follow the same visible pattern. Learn attested pairs rather than assuming that every adjective ending in ہ has this noun form.

The new word behaves as a noun. In these examples, بچپن is masculine, while سادگی and تازگی are feminine. A suffix can help you recognize a family of words, but the lexical entry settles the meaning and usage.
