Placement of the Conditional Clitic

Level 3Sounds Like pozicíâ bi / b

The particle би / б creates the conditional mood (e.g., 'I would go'). It is mobile but must follow sound harmony: use б after vowels and би after consonants.

How It Works

The placement and form of the conditional clitic are essential for natural-sounding Ukrainian.

1. The Euphony Rule (Sound Harmony)
Ukrainian prioritizes a melodic flow between vowels and consonants:

  • Use б if the preceding word ends in a vowel (e.g., я б, вона б).
  • Use би if the preceding word ends in a consonant (e.g., він би, хтось би, зробив би).

2. Placement and Focus
While the clitic often follows the verb, it is actually mobile. It typically follows the first stressed word in a clause or the word you want to emphasize:

  • Я б це зробив. (Focus on the subject: I would do it.)
  • Зробив би я це... (Focus on the action: If I did it...)

3. Fusion with Conjunctions
The clitic fuses with specific words to create new meanings:

  • якби (як + би): Used for hypothetical 'if' clauses.
  • щоб (що + б): Used for purpose clauses ('so that').

4. Tense Requirement
Crucially, the conditional clitic must always be paired with the past tense form of the verb, even if referring to the present or future.

Examples (5)

  1. Я б із задоволенням поїхав до Львова.

I would go to Lviv with pleasure.

Word by Word: I [would] with pleasure went to Lviv.

Note the use of 'б' because the preceding word 'я' ends in a vowel.

  2. Він би ніколи так не вчинив.

He would never have done such a thing.

Word by Word: He [would] never so not acted.

Note the use of 'би' because 'він' ends in a consonant.

  3. Ми хотіли б замовити каву.

We would like to order coffee.

Word by Word: We wanted [would] to order coffee.

This is a polite request. 'б' follows the vowel 'и' in 'хотіли'.

  4. Хто б міг подумати!

    Who would have thought!

Word by Word: Who [would] could to think!

The clitic 'б' follows the pronoun 'хто' to emphasize the subject of the surprise.

  5. Якби ти знав, ти б не сміявся.

If you knew, you wouldn't be laughing.

Word by Word: If you knew, you [would] not laughed.

The first 'би' is fused into 'якби'. The second 'б' follows the pronoun 'ти'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present tense with the conditional clitic.

    Я б це роблю.
    Я б це робив.

In Ukrainian, the conditional mood always requires the past tense form of the verb, regardless of when the action takes place.

  • Ignoring the vowel/consonant euphony rule.

    Я би пішов.
    Я б пішов.

'Я би пішов' is understandable and common, but the euphony rule prefers 'б' after a vowel and 'би' after a consonant.

  • Doubling the particle in 'якби' clauses.

    Якби я мав би час...
    Якби я мав час...

The word 'якби' already contains the conditional particle. Adding another 'би' is redundant and grammatically incorrect.

Learn This First

To understand the placement of the conditional clitic 'би/б', you first need to know how to form the past tense, as the conditional mood uses these forms.
