Gender and Number Agreement in the Conditional
Ukrainian conditional mood = Past Tense Verb + Particle (би/б). The verb changes based on gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) or number (plural), not by person (I, you, he).
How It Works
The Ukrainian conditional mood (умовний спосіб) expresses hypothetical, desired, or unreal actions. It is formed by taking the past tense form of the verb and adding the particle би or б.
1. Verb Agreement:
Because it uses the past tense as a base, the verb agrees with the subject in gender and number:
- Masculine: -в (Я хотів би, Ти хотів би, Він хотів би)
- Feminine: -ла (Я хотіла б, Ти хотіла б, Вона б хотіла)
- Neuter: -ло (Воно б хотіло)
- Plural: -ли (Ми хотіли б, Ви хотіли б, Вони хотіли б)
2. The Particle (би vs. б):
The choice depends on the sound that comes before it (euphony):
- Use би after a word ending in a consonant (Він би...).
- Use б after a word ending in a vowel (Я б..., Вона б...).
3. Placement:
The particle is mobile. While it often follows the verb, it can follow the subject or a conjunction for emphasis. For example, both Я б хотів and Хотів би я are correct, though the first is more common in neutral speech.
4. Time Reference:
Ukrainian uses the same form for present and past hypotheticals. Context or the perfective aspect vs. imperfective aspect usually clarifies the timing.
Examples (4)
- Я хотіла б замовити каву.
I (female) would like to order coffee.
Word by Word: I wanted (fem.) would to-order coffee.
The speaker is female, so the verb uses the feminine past tense ending '-ла' followed by 'б' (because 'хотіла' ends in a vowel).
- Він би допоміг тобі, якби мав час.
He would help you if he had time.
Word by Word: He would helped (masc.) you, if-would had time.
The masculine subject 'він' requires the masculine ending '-в'. 'Би' is used because 'він' ends in a consonant.
- Ми б поїхали в гори влітку.
We would go to the mountains in the summer.
Word by Word: We would went (pl.) in mountains in-summer.
For plural subjects like 'ми', the verb uses the plural ending '-ли'. 'Б' follows the vowel 'ми'.
- Ти хотів би піти в кіно?
Would you (masculine) like to go to the cinema?
Word by Word: You wanted (masc.) would to-go in cinema?
Even though the subject is 'you', the verb agrees with the gender of the person being addressed.
Common Mistakes
A woman using the masculine form for herself.
Different MeaningЯ хотів би спати.Я хотіла б спати.In the conditional, the verb must match the speaker's gender. A woman must use the feminine '-ла' ending.
Using the future tense as a base for the conditional.
Я буду би читати.Я читав би.The conditional mood is never formed with the future tense; it always uses the past tense stem.
Adding an extra 'би' after 'якби'.
Якби би я знав...Якби я знав...The word 'якби' already contains the particle 'би'. Adding another one is redundant and incorrect.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn gender and number agreement in the conditional mood, you first need to understand how the conditional is formed using the particle 'би/б'. Because the conditional uses the same morphological forms as the past tense, you must also be familiar with how verbs change their endings to agree with masculine, feminine, and plural subjects in the past tense.
