Placement of Би and Б

Level 4Sounds Like častka bi/b u skladenomu prisudku

The particle би/б is the Ukrainian equivalent of 'would.' It creates the conditional mood. Its form depends on the preceding sound: use б after vowels and би after consonants.

How It Works

To use the conditional mood correctly, you must follow these rules for orthography, euphony, and placement:

1. The Writing Rule and Homophones:
The particle би/б is generally written as a separate word from the verb (e.g., читав би). It is fused in certain conjunctions, such as якби (if) and щоб (in order to). Crucially, do not confuse these with the separate forms що б (what would) and як би (how would), where the particle remains separate because що and як function as pronouns or adverbs rather than conjunctions.

2. The Phonological Rule (Euphony):
Ukrainian prioritizes melodic sound. Therefore, the choice between б and би depends on the word immediately preceding the particle, regardless of its part of speech:

  • Use б if the preceding word ends in a vowel (e.g., вона б, я б).
  • Use би if the preceding word ends in a consonant (e.g., він би, був би).

3. Placement and Enclitic Nature:
In a compound predicate, the particle naturally follows the finite auxiliary or copula (e.g., хотів би йти, був би вчителем). Following Wackernagel's Law, the particle often moves to the 'second position' in the sentence, right after the subject or an adverb. Importantly, the particle би/б can never be the first word in a sentence or clause; it must always follow a meaningful word.

4. Double Usage in 'If... then...' Sentences:
In hypothetical conditional sentences, the conditional marker must appear in both clauses. For example: Якби я знав, я б прийшов (If I had known, I would have come).

5. Morphology and Tense:
The conditional mood never uses present or future tense forms. It typically uses the past tense form of the verb, which does not conjugate by person but requires agreement in gender and number with the subject. Alternatively, it can use the infinitive (e.g., Піти б додому). When used with an infinitive, the structure expresses a strong wish, desire, or hypothetical suggestion (the optative mood), and the verb remains immutable.

Examples (4)

  1. Я б хотів замовити каву.

I would like to order a coffee.

Word by Word: I [cond] wanted to-order coffee.

Here, 'б' is used because 'я' ends in a vowel. It follows the subject, which is a very common 'second position' placement.

  2. Він міг би бути кращим учнем.

He could have been a better student.

Word by Word: He could [cond] to-be better student.

We use 'би' because 'міг' ends in a consonant. The particle attaches to the auxiliary verb 'міг' in this compound nominal predicate.

  3. Ми хотіли б поїхати в гори.

We would like to go to the mountains.

Word by Word: We wanted [cond] to-go to mountains.

The particle 'б' follows the vowel at the end of 'хотіли'. It sits between the auxiliary verb and the infinitive.

  4. Хто б міг подумати!

    Who would have thought!

Word by Word: Who [cond] could to-think!

The particle attaches to the question word 'хто', following the rule of gravitating toward the start of the clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'би' after a vowel or 'б' after a consonant.

    Я би сказав... / Він б прийшов...
    Я б сказав... / Він би прийшов...

This is a violation of Ukrainian euphony. Always check the last letter of the preceding word.

  • Doubling the particle when using 'якби' or 'щоб'.

    Якби я би знав...
    Якби я знав...

The conjunctions 'якби' and 'щоб' already contain the conditional particle. Adding another 'би' is redundant and grammatically incorrect.

Learn This First

To learn the placement of the conditional particle 'би/б' in compound predicates, learners need to understand the basic formation of the conditional mood, the rules of Ukrainian euphony that dictate the choice between 'би' and 'б', and the past tense verb forms which are the primary components of these predicates.
