подобатися + Dative
Dative with Подобатися
In this Ukrainian construction, the thing or person being liked is the nominative subject. The person who feels the liking is in the dative case, and the verb agrees with the nominative subject.
How It Works
This pattern is the standard way to express a positive reaction or impression. Unlike любити (to love/like), which implies a deep or stable affection for people, things, or activities, подобатися is often used for immediate impressions, specific preferences, or physical attraction. Note that while любити is commonly used for romantic partners, the verb кохати is more intense and specific to romantic/passionate love.
1. The Experiencer (Dative):
The person who feels the 'liking' must be in the Dative case. Common pronouns include:
- Мені (to me)
- Тобі (to you)
- Йому/Їй (to him/her)
- Нам (to us)
- Вам (to you pl.)
- Їм (to them)
2. Verb Agreement and Suffixes:
The verb must agree with the thing or person being liked (the Nominative subject). While often used in the 3rd person, it conjugates fully if the subject is 'I' or 'you':
- Ти мені подобаєшся (I like you / You are pleasing to me).
- Мені подобаються ці квіти (I like these flowers / These flowers are pleasing to me).
- Я йому подобаюсь (He likes me / I am pleasing to him).
Because it is a reflexive verb, the suffix alternates: -ся is used after consonants (подобається, подобаються), while -сь is preferred after vowels for euphony (подобаюсь, подобалось). The full -ся is also valid after vowels, as in подобаюся and подобалося.
3. Word Order:
The neutral word order for this construction is Dative + Verb + Nominative (e.g., Мені подобається музика). Placing the Nominative first often adds specific emphasis to the subject.
4. Negation and Infinitives:
To negate the feeling, simply add не before the verb: Мені не подобається цей колір. If you like performing an action, use an infinitive. In this case, the verb подобатися always stays in the 3rd person singular: Мені подобається читати.
5. Past Tense and Aspect:
In the past, the verb agrees with the gender and number of the subject. You must choose between the Imperfective подобатися (ongoing state) and the Perfective partner сподобатися (specific result/verdict):
- Imperfective: Мені подобався цей будинок (I liked/used to like this house).
- Perfective: Мені сподобався цей фільм (I liked this movie — referring to the specific experience).
Note: When followed by an infinitive in the past tense, the verb defaults to the neuter singular: Мені подобалося подорожувати.
Examples (4)
- Мені подобається твоя нова ідея.
I like your new idea.
Word by Word: To me is pleasing your new idea.
The subject 'idea' is feminine singular, so the verb 'подобається' is also singular.
- Тобі подобаються ці квіти?
Do you like these flowers?
Word by Word: To you are pleasing these flowers?
The subject 'flowers' is plural, so the verb changes to 'подобаються'.
- Нам дуже сподобався вчорашній концерт.
We really liked yesterday's concert.
Word by Word: To us very much pleased yesterday's concert.
The perfective 'сподобався' is used here to express a completed verdict on a specific event.
- Їй подобається подорожувати.
She likes to travel.
Word by Word: To her is pleasing to travel.
When followed by an infinitive, the verb 'подобається' stays in the third-person singular form.
Common Mistakes
Putting the person who feels the liking in the nominative instead of the dative.
Я подобаю цю книгу.Мені подобається ця книга.To say I like this book, use the dative Мені for the person who likes it and the nominative ця книга for the book. Я can be a valid subject when I am the person being liked: Я йому подобаюсь means He likes me.
Using a singular verb with a plural subject naming the things being liked.
Ці квіти мені подобається.Ці квіти мені подобаються.With the plural subject ці квіти, use подобаються. The verb agrees with the flowers, not with the dative experiencer мені. A list of separate singular subjects has additional agreement rules; it is not a reason to mark every singular verb before such a list as incorrect.
Dropping the reflexive suffix from подобатися.
Мені подобає це.Мені подобається це.Keep -ся or its variant -сь as part of this verb. After a vowel, both подобалося and подобалось are valid; the shorter variant can help the flow of speech. Do not label the full -ся form as ungrammatical.
