я + -у/-ю
Present First-person Singular
To say 'I [verb]' in Ukrainian, remove the infinitive ending -ти and add -у or -ю.
How It Works
In the present tense, Ukrainian verbs are grouped into two conjugations. While the endings for the first-person singular ('I') are consistent, the verb stems frequently undergo alternations that you should become confident with.
1. Choosing the Ending:
- -ю: Used after vowels (читати → читаю), after soft consonants (говорити → говорю), and after the contracted suffix '-ува-' / '-юва-' which becomes '-у-' / '-ю-' (працювати → працюю). Verbs like вити (я в'ю) or бити (я б'ю) insert a 'й' sound, written with an apostrophe. Note: The verb лити (to pour) is an exception; it uses a double soft 'л' without an apostrophe: я ллю. Also note that verbs based on the roots -давати and -ставати drop the '-ва-' suffix (давати → даю, ставати → стаю).
- -у: Used after hard consonants. Note a strict Ukrainian spelling rule: you must write -у after hushing sounds (ж, ч, ш, щ). In certain verb classes, velar stems (г, к, х) change into hushing sounds and take the -у ending.
2. Consonant Alternations:
This is a core feature of Ukrainian. Certain stem consonants change when you add the 'I' ending:
- Labials (б, п, в, м, ф): An л is inserted before the ending (робити → роблю).
- Velars: In specific classes, these change to hushing sounds: г → ж (бігти → біжу), к → ч (скакати → скачу), х → ш (дихати → дишу).
- Dentals/Sibilants: д → дж (ходити → ходжу); т → ч (хотіти → хочу); с → ш (писати → пишу); з → ж (возити → вожу); ст → щ (чистити → чищу).
Persistence of Alternation: In the First Conjugation (e.g., писати), the consonant shift typically persists through all persons (я пишу, ти пишеш). In the Second Conjugation (e.g., ходити), the shift for dentals/sibilants occurs only in the 'я' form (я ходжу, but ти ходиш). However, for labials in the Second Conjugation, the inserted л appears in both the 'я' form and the third-person plural form (я роблю, вони роблять).
3. Stress Shifts:
In many verbs, the stress falls on the ending in the 'я' form but shifts back to the stem in all other persons (я роблю, but ти робиш).
4. Reflexive Verbs:
When conjugating reflexive verbs, since the 'я' ending (-у or -ю) is a vowel, you add the suffix -сь (e.g., дивитися → я дивлюсь).
5. Irregular Verbs:
A few high-frequency verbs have unique forms: бути (я є), їсти (я їм), and дати (я дам).
6. Usage Note:
This pattern represents both simple and continuous actions. However, it only indicates the present tense for imperfective verbs. If you use this ending with a perfective verb, it forms the simple future.
Examples (6)
- Я читаю цікаву книжку.
I am reading an interesting book.
Word by Word: I read interesting book.
The verb 'читати' (to read) ends in a vowel 'а', so we add '-ю'.
- Я дуже люблю українську кухню.
I really love Ukrainian cuisine.
Word by Word: I very love Ukrainian cuisine.
The verb 'любити' (to love) ends in a labial 'б', so an 'л' is inserted before the ending: 'люблю'.
- Зараз я пишу листа другові.
Right now I am writing a letter to a friend.
Word by Word: Now I write letter to friend.
The verb 'писати' (to write) undergoes a consonant shift from 'с' to 'ш', resulting in 'пишу'.
- Я ходжу в школу щодня.
I go to school every day.
Word by Word: I go in school every day.
The verb 'ходити' (to go/walk) changes 'д' to 'дж' in the first person: 'ходжу'.
- Я можу допомогти тобі.
I can help you.
Word by Word: I can to help you.
The verb 'могти' (to be able) shows a velar shift where 'г' changes to 'ж', resulting in 'можу'.
- Я працюю в офісі.
I work in an office.
Word by Word: I work in office.
For verbs with the suffix '-ува-', it contracts to '-у-' in the present tense: 'працювати' becomes 'працюю'.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the 'л' insertion for labial verbs.
Я любу тебе.Я люблю тебе.Second-conjugation verbs (in -ити or -іти) whose stem ends in б, п, в, м or ф (labials) insert an 'л' before the first-person ending: люблю, куплю.
Failing to contract the '-ува-' / '-юва-' suffix.
Я працюваю тут.Я працюю тут.In the present tense, the suffix '-ува-' or '-юва-' contracts to '-у-' or '-ю-' before adding the ending. Note that verbs ending in just '-вати' (like 'відчувати' or 'бувати') do not undergo this contraction.
Overusing the pronoun 'я'.
Я йду, я бачу, я чую.Йду, бачу, чую.In Ukrainian, the verb ending clearly indicates 'I', so repeating 'я' can sound redundant or overly emphatic.
