Proverbs
Read the complete native examples: seize an opportunity, do not rush a decision, quote a belief about consequences, and adapt to a new workplace.
How It Works
1. Read the Advice in Context
This entry presents sayings within complete statements. In the first, good business provides an opportunity: น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตัก advises acting while the opportunity is available. The Chula teaching handout gives this opportunity meaning. In the second, ไม่ต้องรีบตัดสินใจ introduces advice not to rush a decision, followed by ช้า ๆ ได้พร้าเล่มงาม. Learn the displayed saying and its setting; it does not guarantee that every slow decision succeeds.
2. Distinguish Quoted Belief from a Fact Claim
ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว states do good, receive good; do bad, receive bad. The DLTV religious-teaching handout includes this saying. In the native example, the speaker also predicts that the other person will receive the consequences of karma. This explains what the speaker says; it does not certify a universal moral law or a guaranteed future outcome.
3. Read the Images and Constructions
เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม advises adapting to the people where one goes; the example applies it to a new workplace. Compare สำนวน in its own complete examples. Some expressions discussed there differ from สุภาษิต giving advice. Compare the displayed four-syllable set phrases and their own meanings rather than requiring every proverb to have four syllables, rhyme, or one fixed sentence structure. Read four-syllable set phrases separately from a claim that every similar-looking expression is a proverb.
4. Reproduce the Requested Saying
The first exercise requests งานนี้ปอกกล้วยเข้าปาก, describing this task as easy. The school lesson explains ปอกกล้วยเข้าปาก with an easy-task comparison. งานนี้มันเป็นชิ้นของเค้ก translates the English cake image instead of reproducing that Thai saying; this is not a claim that nobody could interpret it in any context. The second requests the exact parallel wording ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว. The alternative can express an understandable idea but does not reproduce that specified wording. Learn สุภาษิต and สำนวน through their full examples without assuming that all word changes, abbreviations, or contextual adaptations are universally invalid.
Examples (4)
- ช่วงนี้เศรษฐกิจดีมีลูกค้าเยอะ น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตักนะ
Business is good these days and there are many customers. Take the opportunity while it is available.
Word by Word: these days | economy good | have many customers | water rises | hurry to scoop | [particle]
The saying น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตัก urges using the current opportunity. It does not mean preparing for a future problem, and นะ is the written final particle.
- ไม่ต้องรีบตัดสินใจ ช้า ๆ ได้พร้าเล่มงาม
Do not rush the decision. Taking time and care brings a good result.
Word by Word: not need | rush deciding | slowly | obtain | a fine machete
The speaker advises patience with the displayed saying ช้า ๆ ได้พร้าเล่มงาม. This reports the advice rather than promising that every delayed decision will succeed.
- ปล่อยเขาไปเถอะ ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว เดี๋ยวเขาก็ได้รับกรรมเอง
Let him be. Do good and receive good; do bad and receive bad. He will soon receive the consequences of karma himself.
Word by Word: let | him | go | [particle] | do good | receive good | do bad | receive bad | soon | he | then | receive karma | himself
ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว uses parallel wording, and the final clause expresses this speaker’s prediction. The teaching handout quotes the moral saying; this entry explains its language without asserting that the prediction is a proven future fact.
- ไปทำงานที่ใหม่ก็ต้องปรับตัว เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม
Going to work somewhere new calls for adapting. Follow the customs of the place you enter.
Word by Word: go | work | at a new place | then | need to adapt | enter a town of squinting eyes | must squint to follow
The speaker applies เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม to adapting at a new workplace. The school handout explains it as following how the people there behave; it does not command accepting every possible custom in every situation.
Common Mistakes
Not using the specified Thai easy-task saying.
งานนี้มันเป็นชิ้นของเค้กงานนี้ปอกกล้วยเข้าปากThis exercise requests งานนี้ปอกกล้วยเข้าปาก. The cake-image sentence does not reproduce that Thai saying, even if someone could interpret a translated image in context.
Not reproducing the exact parallel saying requested here.
ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วก็ได้รับสิ่งชั่วทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่วThe exercise requests ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว. The alternative may express a meaningful thought but does not reproduce the specified wording. This task does not prohibit all contextual changes to every saying.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand Thai proverbs (สุภาษิต), you need to be comfortable with figurative language and the rhythmic, often four-syllable structures common in Thai idioms and poetry. Proverbs frequently use archaic or metaphorical language that goes beyond basic sentence structure.
- Reading Idioms in Context
Proverbs are a specific type of idiom (สำนวน) that convey moral lessons, so understanding how Thai uses figurative language is essential.
Level 6 - Poetry Forms
Many traditional Thai proverbs utilize internal rhyme and specific syllable counts derived from classical Thai poetic structures.
