Adjective + ๆ
Adjective Repetition
Read สีแดง ๆ, ช้า ๆ, and ดี ๆ with the surrounding sentence. The examples describe a color, the manner of speaking, and qualities of children, fruit, or a bag; repetition does not have one fixed English equivalent.
How It Works
1. Read the Whole Expression
The repetition mark ๆ follows the form to be repeated. In the displayed examples, แดง ๆ describes a color, ช้า ๆ describes how to speak, and เล็ก ๆ or ดี ๆ describes the people or objects in context. Do not add “somewhat” or “more polite” automatically to every repeated form.
2. Descriptions and Groups
เขาสวมเสื้อสีแดง ๆ has a reddish-color reading here. It does not establish a precise color measurement or prove that the shirt cannot be solid red. มีแต่เด็กตัวเล็ก ๆ describes small children; the whole phrase contributes the group reading, rather than repetition independently proving an exact number. เลือกผลไม้ลูกดี ๆ นะ asks for good-quality fruit. อยากได้กระเป๋าใบเล็ก ๆ expresses wanting a small or smallish bag, without a specific size measurement.
3. Manner in a Request
พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ requests slower speech with ช้า ๆ, หน่อย, and ครับ in the whole utterance. Do not attribute its entire effect to repetition or guarantee that it is encouraging rather than stern in every delivery.
4. The Displayed Pronunciation Contrast
The university profile contrasts ordinary dii-dii with an emphatic dií-dii pronunciation having a raised first tone. The exercise specifically requests ดี ๆ (Dii-dii), not its displayed emphatic alternative ดี๊ดี (Díi-dii). This teaches that contrast, not a rule that every unchanged-tone repetition must soften or that every repetition has the same intensity. No audio is supplied by this explanation.
5. The Other Exercise
The report exercise requests รายงานนี้ดีมาก, meaning this report is very good, with มาก following ดี. รายงานนี้ดี ๆ มาก does not reproduce that requested construction. This is not a prohibition of the repetition mark in all formal or academic writing, and มาก is not an interchangeable replacement for every approximate or group-related reading.
6. Compare Other Constructions
Compare the complete มาก intensifier, หน่อย request, นะ ending, and linked change-of-quality expression in their own contexts. A construction describing change can also contain repetition; these are not a universal static-versus-changing division.
Examples (5)
- เขาสวมเสื้อสีแดง ๆ
He is wearing a reddish shirt.
Word by Word: He wear shirt color red red
สีแดง ๆ has a reddish-color reading here. It does not by itself specify an exact shade or exclude a solid-red shirt.
- พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ
Please speak a bit slowly.
Word by Word: Speak slow slow a bit [polite]
The complete request combines ช้า ๆ with หน่อย and ครับ. Repetition alone does not guarantee an encouraging or less stern delivery.
- มีแต่เด็กตัวเล็ก ๆ
There are only small children.
Word by Word: Have only child body small small
เด็กตัวเล็ก ๆ describes small children in this phrase. Interpret the group with มีแต่ and the noun, without treating repetition as an independent exact-number marker.
- เลือกผลไม้ลูกดี ๆ นะ
Pick out the good fruits.
Word by Word: Choose fruit [classifier] good good [particle]
ดี ๆ describes the desired quality of the fruit being selected. The whole instruction asks for good fruit, rather than automatically making good mean only somewhat good.
- อยากได้กระเป๋าใบเล็ก ๆ
[I] want a smallish bag.
Word by Word: Want get bag [classifier] small small
The omitted subject is interpreted as the speaker in this translation. ใบเล็ก ๆ gives a small or smallish-bag reading, without naming a precise size.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested ดีมาก construction.
รายงานนี้ดี ๆ มากรายงานนี้ดีมากThe exercise requests รายงานนี้ดีมาก, with มาก after ดี for very good. รายงานนี้ดี ๆ มาก does not match that requested expression. This is not a universal ban on ๆ in formal writing or a rule to substitute มาก for every repetition.
Using the displayed emphatic alternative instead of the requested ordinary repetition.
ดี๊ดี (Díi-dii)ดี ๆ (Dii-dii)The task requests ดี ๆ (Dii-dii) and contrasts it with emphatic ดี๊ดี (Díi-dii), whose first pronunciation is raised. The alternative is meaningful but does not reproduce the requested form; this contrast does not make every ordinary repetition approximate or automatically polite.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand how to soften an adjective by repeating it, you first need to recognize the repetition mark (ๆ) and understand the basic placement and function of adjectives in Thai sentences.
- ๆThe Repetition Mark
The repetition mark (mai yamok) is the orthographic symbol used to indicate that the preceding word should be repeated.
Foundations - Adjectives Follow The Noun
Understanding how adjectives function as modifiers following a noun is essential before learning how to modify the intensity or tone of those adjectives through repetition.
Level 1 - Adjectives Work As Verbs
In Thai, adjectives often function as stative verbs; understanding this usage is necessary to apply softening repetition in predicate positions.
