ต้องการ

Want — Formal

Level 1

ต้องการ (dtông-gaan) can mean 'want', 'need', or 'require'. It can introduce an object or an action. The examples include assistance, staffing, and service requests; the verb is not restricted to official or serious situations.

How It Works

The choice of a word for 'want' depends on the register, the relationship between speakers, and the situation. ต้องการ can be used in business and service interactions, as well as other contexts; it does not make every utterance formal or polite.

1. Usage with Nouns
The pattern Subject + ต้องการ + Noun names something wanted or needed. A company needing staff and a person asking for help are possible contexts. Decide between English 'want', 'need', and 'require' from the complete statement rather than treating necessity as automatic.

2. Usage with Verbs
The pattern Subject + ต้องการ + Verb names a desired action. ที่จะ (thîi jà) can occur before the following action in a fuller construction; it is not required in every sentence with ต้องการ. Read the complete complement rather than assigning a universal speech-versus-writing rule.

3. Nuance and Tone
อยาก can express a desire to do something, and เอา can express taking or choosing an object, including in offers. Compare the complete constructions. ต้องการ may sound more formal in some conversations, but using it with friends is not automatically ungrammatical or inappropriate. Requests also depend on wording, particles, delivery, and the relationship between speakers.

Examples (4)

  1. เราต้องการความช่วยเหลือ

    We need assistance.

Word by Word: We + want/need + help

The sentence states that the group referred to by เรา wants or needs help. In context it can function as a request for assistance; the verb alone does not make that request official, and the sentence does not determine whether the listener is included in the group.

  2. บริษัทต้องการพนักงานใหม่

    The company requires new employees.

Word by Word: Company + want/need + employee + new

The company wants or needs new staff. A job advertisement is one possible context, not information encoded by ต้องการ itself. The English rendering selects 'requires' and plural 'employees'; those choices come from interpretation of the statement.

  3. คุณต้องการรับประทานอะไรครับ?

What would you like to eat, sir?

Word by Word: You + want/need + eat (formal) + what + [polite particle]

This asks what the listener would like to eat and can be used in a service interaction. รับประทาน is a more elevated alternative to กิน in this context. ครับ is a polite particle associated with the speaker's speech style; it does not identify the listener as male. The English 'sir' is a selected form of address, not a word separately named in the Thai question.

  4. ผมต้องการพบผู้จัดการ

I would like to see the manager.

    Word by Word: I (male) + want/need + meet + manager

The speaker expresses a wish to meet the manager. This can be a request in a business setting, but that setting is not specified by the verb. The English 'would like' is a courteous rendering of the request; it does not establish a separate Thai tense marker here.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ต้อง alone where the intended meaning is 'I want water'.

    ผมต้องน้ำ
    ผมต้องการน้ำ

For the intended meaning 'I want water', the correction shown is ผมต้องการน้ำ. Do not shorten ต้องการ to ต้อง and assume the same wanting pattern. ต้อง has other uses, including obligation before an appropriate predicate; this exercise does not claim that every use of ต้อง means only 'must', or translate น้ำ as an English verb in ผมต้องน้ำ.
