ไม่ใช่

Denying an Identity

Level 1

The examples say he is not Thai, this is not my key, and I am not a doctor. The fourth says it is not that I do not want to go. Read ไม่ใช่ with the complete following expression.

How It Works

1. Read the Identity Denials
เขาไม่ใช่คนไทย denies that he is a Thai person. ผมไม่ใช่หมอ denies that the speaker is a doctor. Learn these complete constructions rather than a rule that every noun in every context must follow one particular negative form. Compare ไม่ in its separate negative examples.

2. Read the Key Example
นี่ไม่ใช่กุญแจของฉัน says that this is not my key. It denies the identification with the speaker’s key; it does not say that the speaker owns no keys.

3. Correct a Premise or Answer a Tag
ไม่ใช่ว่าผมไม่อยากไป means it is not that I do not want to go. The whole negative-of-wanting premise is denied, without specifying the speaker’s actual reason. In the NIU examples with ใช่ไหม, ใช่ confirms and ไม่ใช่ gives a negative reply. Read the question and answer together; this does not prescribe one answer for every type of Thai question.

4. Follow the Requested Forms
The first exercise requests ผมไม่ใช่คนอเมริกัน, a complete denial of American identity. ผมไม่คนอเมริกัน does not reproduce that requested construction. The second requests เขาไม่ใช่หมอ for denying that he is a doctor. เขาไม่เป็นหมอ does not reproduce that form; it can have another reading in context, such as not becoming or not taking a doctor’s role. Do not turn the exercise into a universal ban on negating เป็น or a claim that every ไม่เป็น means inability.

Examples (4)

  1. เขาไม่ใช่คนไทย

He is not a Thai person.

Word by Word: he | not be | a Thai person

The complete statement denies that the person is Thai. It is an identity denial, not a statement that the person does not exist.

  2. นี่ไม่ใช่กุญแจของฉัน

    This is not my key.

Word by Word: this | not be | my key

The statement denies that this object is the speaker’s key. It does not say that the speaker has no keys.

  3. ผมไม่ใช่หมอ

    I am not a doctor.

Word by Word: I | not be | a doctor

ผม is the written first-person pronoun; the sentence denies being a doctor. The pronoun choice is not proof of the speaker’s biological gender.

  4. ไม่ใช่ว่าผมไม่อยากไป

It's not that I don't want to go.

Word by Word: not be the case | that | I | not want | go

ไม่ใช่ว่า denies the complete premise ผมไม่อยากไป. The sentence does not supply the actual reason or assert a particular alternative.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the complete identity-denial form requested in this exercise.

    ผมไม่คนอเมริกัน
    ผมไม่ใช่คนอเมริกัน

The exercise requests ผมไม่ใช่คนอเมริกัน. ผมไม่คนอเมริกัน does not reproduce that specified construction. This comparison does not classify every contextual use of ไม่ before a noun phrase.

  • Using ไม่เป็น when the exercise requests the displayed ไม่ใช่ doctor-identification denial.

    เขาไม่เป็นหมอ
    เขาไม่ใช่หมอ

Reproduce เขาไม่ใช่หมอ for this specified task. เขาไม่เป็นหมอ can have another contextual reading but does not reproduce the requested form. Do not infer that every ไม่เป็น is ungrammatical or always expresses lack of skill.

Learn This First

To understand 'ไม่ใช่', you first need to know the basic negation particle 'ไม่' and how the copula 'เป็น' functions to identify nouns. Since 'ไม่ใช่' negates identity (e.g., 'I am not a doctor'), familiarity with basic Thai sentence structure is also required.
