หรอก
Correcting an Assumption
หรอก appears in the displayed negative statements to correct or reject an assumption. Its effect depends on the whole utterance and situation.
How It Works
1. Read The Negative Statement
ไม่ใช่หรอก rejects an identification or statement. เขาไม่มาหรอก says that he is not coming, countering an expectation in the displayed reading. ไม่ supplies the negation; หรอก contributes the speaker’s stance toward the assumption.
2. Read The Situation
ไม่เป็นไรหรอก can reassure someone that things are okay. ผมพูดไม่เก่งหรอกครับ can downplay the speaker’s skill. ไม่แพงหรอกนะ says it is not expensive and also contains นะ. The words do not prove that a speaker is calm, humble, or consoling in every situation.
3. Notice The Contrastive Example
ก็ดีหรอก แต่แพงไปหน่อย concedes that something is good, then adds that it is a bit expensive. ก็ดีนะ แต่แพงไปหน่อย can also be grammatical. They use different particles, so read each whole utterance in its setting. An isolated positive phrase such as อาหารอร่อยหรอก needs discourse context before its stance can be judged.
4. Keep The Question Particle Distinct
The remaining card asks for ไปเหรอ? as a confirmation question using เหรอ. ไปหรอก? changes the particle and does not reproduce that requested question. The two spellings name different particles in this task.
Examples (5)
- ไม่ใช่หรอก
That's not it / It's not like that.
Word by Word: not-is [corrective]
The statement rejects the suggested identification or understanding. ไม่ใช่ supplies the negative meaning, while หรอก contributes the contrast with an assumption.
- ไม่เป็นไรหรอก
It's really okay / Don't worry about it.
Word by Word: not-be-anything [corrective]
This can reassure a listener that things are okay. Whether the speaker is upset, or the listener has apologized, must come from the conversation.
- ผมพูดไม่เก่งหรอกครับ
I’m not actually that good at speaking.
Word by Word: I speak not talented [corrective] [polite]
The speaker downplays their speaking skill. The Thai sentence does not name a particular language or state that a compliment preceded it.
- เขาไม่มาหรอก
He's not coming (despite what you might think).
Word by Word: he not come [corrective]
The statement says he is not coming and can counter an expectation that he will. It does not by itself establish how certain the speaker is or what the listener hopes.
- ไม่แพงหรอกนะ
It's not expensive, you know.
Word by Word: not expensive [corrective] [softener]
The statement says it is not expensive and combines หรอก with นะ. The precise attitude depends on the conversation.
Common Mistakes
When writing the confirmation question ไปเหรอ?, replacing เหรอ with หรอก.
ไปหรอก?ไปเหรอ?This card requests ไปเหรอ? using the confirmation-question particle เหรอ. ไปหรอก? changes that particle; it does not give the requested written question. Read other uses of หรอก in their own discourse context.
