มิ

Not — Literary

Level 5

มิ means “not.” It is more formal than ไม่. The examples show มิอาจ, มิใช่, มิได้, มิควร, and มิให้ in complete phrases.

How It Works

1. A Formal Negative
มิ means “not” and is more formal than ไม่. In มิอาจหลีกเลี่ยงได้, it helps express “cannot be avoided.” In ความรักมิใช่การครอบครอง, มิใช่ denies the identification of love with possession.

2. Read The Whole Phrase
การกระทำนี้มิควรเกิดขึ้น says “This action should not happen.” เพื่อมิให้เกิดความเสียหาย states the purpose of preventing damage. Learn มิอาจ, มิใช่, มิควร, and มิให้ with their surrounding words rather than giving all of them one English translation.

3. มิได้ Does Not Fix The Tense
มิได้มีเจตนาจะล่วงเกิน denies an intention to offend. Other contexts give มิได้ readings such as “did not” or “cannot.” The time and scope come from the complete statement.

4. Learn Related Expressions Separately
มิฉะนั้น means “otherwise.” A longer expression containing มิ needs its own reading; the negative word alone does not settle every compound or double-negative construction.

5. Negative Or Question
มิ is a negative word. To ask the selected “Are you going?” question, use ไปไหม. The question particle and the negative word have different jobs.

Examples (5)

  1. มิอาจหลีกเลี่ยงได้

    It cannot be avoided.

Word by Word: not may avoid can

มิอาจหลีกเลี่ยงได้ expresses an inability to avoid something. Read มิอาจ with the rest of the phrase.

  2. ความรักมิใช่การครอบครอง

    Love is not possession.

Word by Word: love not-is [nominalizer] possess

มิใช่ denies the identification of love with possession. มิ gives the negative wording a more formal choice than ไม่.

  3. มิได้มีเจตนาจะล่วงเกิน

There is no intention to offend.

Word by Word: not [marker] have intention will offend

This formally denies an intention to offend. In context, it may clarify a speaker's motives or accompany an apology.

  4. การกระทำนี้มิควรเกิดขึ้น

    This action should not happen.

Word by Word: [nominalizer] act this not-should happen

มิควร means should not here. The statement says that this action should not happen.

  5. เพื่อมิให้เกิดความเสียหาย

    In order to prevent damage.

Word by Word: for not-let happen [nominalizer] damage

The phrase มิให้ is the formal equivalent of 'not letting' or 'preventing' something from happening.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing มิ for an ordinary, casual statement about hunger.

    ผมมิหิวข้าวครับ
    ผมไม่หิวข้าวครับ

The first sentence is understandable and can suit deliberate literary speech. For an ordinary conversation about being hungry, ไม่ fits the intended casual register.

  • Using the negative word มิ in the selected yes/no question.

    ไปมิ?
    ไปไหม?

To ask “Are you going?” in this task, use ไปไหม. มิ is a negative word, while ไหม supplies the yes/no question. This comparison concerns the jobs of the words; a sentence containing a negative can still ask a question.
