อาจจะ
Possibility with อาจจะ
อาจจะ presents a possibility in the four examples. Read the time, the negative ไม่, and the complete predicate separately.
How It Works
อาจจะ presents the displayed action or state as possible. Read the whole phrase rather than deriving future time from the written จะ inside it.
- เขาอาจจะยุ่ง presents being busy as a possibility; the clause does not explicitly name a time.
- พรุ่งนี้ฝนอาจจะตก presents possible rain tomorrow. พรุ่งนี้ supplies tomorrow.
- เราอาจจะไม่ไป presents the possibility of not going. The ไม่ negates ไป in the displayed sequence.
- มันอาจจะแพงเกินไป presents being too expensive as a possibility, without identifying the item or a price.
Compare คงจะ in its own probability contexts. These forms do not supply fixed confidence percentages or establish how the speaker obtained evidence. The exercises request เขาอาจจะไม่มา for might not come and ผมขอไปได้ไหม for the permission request. Read the alternatives within those tasks rather than imposing a universal word-order or permission rule.
Examples (4)
- เขาอาจจะยุ่ง
He might be busy.
Word by Word: he | might | be busy
อาจจะ presents ยุ่ง as a possible state. He is the selected contextual reading of เขา; the Thai clause does not explicitly say now or establish that the person is busy.
- พรุ่งนี้ฝนอาจจะตก
It might rain tomorrow.
Word by Word: tomorrow | rain | might | fall
พรุ่งนี้ explicitly identifies tomorrow, while อาจจะ presents rain as a possibility. This is an example utterance, not a verified forecast.
- เราอาจจะไม่ไป
We might not go.
Word by Word: we | might | not | go
The sequence อาจจะไม่ไป presents the possibility of not going. Kita selects an inclusive we reading of เรา; whether the addressee belongs to the group depends on context.
- มันอาจจะแพงเกินไป
It might be too expensive.
Word by Word: it | might | be expensive | excessively
แพงเกินไป means too expensive here. The clause presents that assessment as possible; it does not specify the item, its price or a benchmark.
Common Mistakes
Changing the requested might-not-come sequence.
เขาไม่อาจจะมาเขาอาจจะไม่มาFor this task, use เขาอาจจะไม่มา, with ไม่ in the following predicate ไม่มา, for He might not come. เขาไม่อาจจะมา puts negation outside อาจจะ and can invite a cannot or inability reading in another context; it does not reproduce the requested scope.
Replacing the requested permission question.
ผมอาจจะไปได้ไหมผมขอไปได้ไหมThe task requests ผมขอไปได้ไหม (May I go?), with ขอ and ได้ไหม for the permission question. ผมอาจจะไปได้ไหม includes possibility wording and can ask about whether going might be possible in another context; use the exact requested permission form here.
