ให้ (ทำเพื่อผู้อื่น)

Do It for Someone

Level 2

Action + ให้ + Person
In แม่ทำกับข้าวให้ลูก, the mother does the cooking and the child is the person it is for. Read the whole sentence to distinguish this from giving something or allowing someone to act.

How It Works

The Actor And The Beneficiary
In แม่ทำกับข้าวให้ลูก, แม่ is the actor, ทำกับข้าว is cooking, and ให้ลูก identifies the child as the beneficiary. The English translation brackets [her] because the Thai sentence does not explicitly state whose child it is.

A Request And A Purchase
ช่วยเปิดประตูให้ผมหน่อยครับ asks someone to open the door for the speaker. ช่วย and หน่อย help frame the request, and ครับ is its polite ending. ให้ผม identifies who the action is for; it does not itself supply the entire polite request.
In ฉันซื้อขนมมาให้คุณ, ฉัน buys the snacks and คุณ is their intended recipient. มา contributes coming or bringing toward the relevant destination in this sentence; it is not a required addition to every benefactive action.

Reading For Someone To Listen
เขาอ่านหนังสือให้ยายฟัง presents reading a book for Grandma to listen. ฟัง makes the listening part explicit. The Thai sentence does not separately state a possessive relationship between เขา and ยาย.

Read The Whole Pattern
For the intended sentence I make som tam for you, choose ผมทำส้มตำให้คุณ: the cooking phrase precedes ให้คุณ. The alternative ผมให้ทำส้มตำคุณ does not express that intended action-plus-beneficiary sequence. This task concerns these exact phrases; it does not prove that every sentence with ให้ before an action is wrong.
Compare the separate entries for giving, causative ให้, สำหรับ, เพื่อ and serial verbs in their own contexts. Translating several words as for does not make their uses interchangeable or divide all uses into concrete versus abstract actions.

Examples (4)

  1. แม่ทำกับข้าวให้ลูก

    Mother cooks for [her] child.

Word by Word: mother | cook | for | child

ให้ลูก identifies the child as the person the cooking is for. The bracketed possessive in the natural translation is supplied by context, rather than explicitly written in the Thai sentence.

  2. ช่วยเปิดประตูให้ผมหน่อยครับ

Please open the door for me.

Word by Word: help | open | door | for | I | request softener | polite ending

ให้ผม identifies the speaker as the beneficiary. ช่วย and หน่อย frame the request, and ครับ supplies its polite ending. The listener is not identified as Sir by ครับ.

  3. ฉันซื้อขนมมาให้คุณ

I bought some snacks for you.

    Word by Word: I | buy | snacks | come | for | you

คุณ is the intended recipient. มา contributes a coming or bringing direction in this sentence; the natural English translation gives the purchase context without treating มา as a tense marker.

  4. เขาอ่านหนังสือให้ยายฟัง

He reads a book for Grandma to listen.

Word by Word: he | read | book | for | grandmother | listen

ยาย is the listener and ฟัง states listening. The sentence does not explicitly say his grandmother; that family relationship would come from context.

Common Mistakes

  • Express The Intended Action For You

    ผมให้ทำส้มตำคุณ
    ผมทำส้มตำให้คุณ

For I make som tam for you in this task, choose ผมทำส้มตำให้คุณ. ผม is the actor, ทำส้มตำ is the action, and ให้คุณ identifies its beneficiary. The alternative ผมให้ทำส้มตำคุณ does not have this intended sequence. It is not the different phrase ให้ผมทำ, and no universal causative explanation is inferred from it.
