ทั้งหมด

All of It

Level 2

Compare พวกเราทั้งหมด (all of us), เราทั้งสองคน (both of us), and ทั้งวัน (all day). These complete expressions have different displayed word orders.

How It Works

1. All of a Set
ทั้งหมด means “all of it/them” or “the whole lot.” In พวกเราทั้งหมด and ขนมทั้งหมด, it follows the pronoun or noun to include the whole relevant set. Learn those displayed patterns without treating this as the only possible position: the dictionary also gives รวมทั้งหมดเป็นเงิน ๕๘ บาท, “It altogether comes to 58 baht.”

2. A Specified Number
เราทั้งสองคนชอบอาหารไทย uses ทั้ง + Number + Classifier to say both of us. The exercise specifically requests นักเรียนทั้งสองคน for “both students.” This does not establish a universal ban on a number and ทั้งหมด occurring in the same larger phrase or sentence.

3. A Whole Duration
เขาทำงานทั้งวัน says he works all day. Compare ทั้ง before the time word in that displayed expression with ทั้งหมด following a noun in the other examples; do not mechanically replace every form with one word order.

4. These Items and This Money
หนังสือเหล่านี้ทั้งหมด names all these books, with เหล่านี้ before ทั้งหมด. เงินทั้งหมดนี้ names all this money. Those examples teach their complete noun phrases; they do not prove a universal [Noun] + [Classifier] + ทั้งหมด rule for one whole object.

5. Compare Related Expressions
ทุก means “every/each” in expressions such as ทุกคน. Both ทุกคนมาแล้ว and คนทั้งหมดมาแล้ว describe the arrival of the relevant people. For the exercise requesting one of those concise patterns, do not add the other quantifier. This is a specified-pattern comparison, not a ban on combining quantifiers for every emphatic context.

6. Learn the Whole Construction
ทั้งหมด does not itself state that a resource has been exhausted. Compare กินหมด, an eating-up result construction, in its own context. ทั้งสิ้น can also mean all or entirely. The overlap does not make all such words freely interchangeable, nor establish a formal-only ranking.

Examples (6)

  1. พวกเราทั้งหมดจะไปเชียงใหม่

All of us are going to Chiang Mai.

Word by Word: Group-we all will go Chiang Mai

Here, ทั้งหมด follows the plural pronoun 'พวกเรา' to indicate the entire group is included.

  2. เขากินขนมทั้งหมดคนเดียว

He ate all the snacks alone.

Word by Word: He eat snack all person single

ทั้งหมด follows the noun 'ขนม' (snack) to show he finished the entire lot.

  3. เราทั้งสองคนชอบอาหารไทย

Both of us (all two of us) like Thai food.

Word by Word: We all two person like food Thai

This example uses ทั้งสองคน to identify both members of the group. It teaches that complete numbered construction, not a universal ban on numbers near ทั้งหมด.

  4. เขาทำงานทั้งวัน

    He works all day.

Word by Word: He work all day

In this example, ทั้ง precedes วัน to form ทั้งวัน, “all day.”

  5. หนังสือเหล่านี้ทั้งหมดราคาเท่าไหร่

How much are all of these books?

Word by Word: Book these-groups all price how-much

The displayed noun phrase is หนังสือเหล่านี้ทั้งหมด, “all these books,” with เหล่านี้ before ทั้งหมด.

  6. เงินทั้งหมดนี้เป็นของผม

All of this money is mine.

Word by Word: Money all this is of I

This shows ทั้งหมด used with an uncountable noun (money) to mean 'the entirety of'.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the specifically requested both-students pattern.

    นักเรียนสองคนทั้งหมด
    นักเรียนทั้งสองคน

For the requested “both students” pattern, use นักเรียนทั้งสองคน. นักเรียนสองคนทั้งหมด does not follow that specified sequence. This exercise does not prohibit every coexistence of a number and ทั้งหมด in a larger context.

  • Reversing the requested นักเรียนทั้งหมด noun phrase.

    ทั้งหมดนักเรียนไปโรงเรียน
    นักเรียนทั้งหมดไปโรงเรียน

For this displayed sentence, use นักเรียนทั้งหมดไปโรงเรียน, with ทั้งหมด after นักเรียน. ทั้งหมดนักเรียนไปโรงเรียน reverses the requested noun-phrase order. Other constructions, such as รวมทั้งหมด, have their own placement.

  • Adding a second quantifier to the requested concise arrival pattern.

    ทุกคนทั้งหมดมาแล้ว
    ทุกคนมาแล้ว / คนทั้งหมดมาแล้ว

The task requests either ทุกคนมาแล้ว or คนทั้งหมดมาแล้ว. ทุกคนทั้งหมดมาแล้ว adds the other quantifier and does not follow that specified concise pattern. The exercise does not establish a universal grammatical ban on emphatic combinations.
