ล้วน

Every One of Them

Level 4

Use ล้วน (lúan) to say 'all' or 'entirely' when you want to stress that every single member of a group shares the same characteristic, or that something is 'purely' one thing.

How It Works

1. Read The Group And Its Predicate
In พวกเราล้วนเป็นคนไทย, ล้วน says that the statement applies to all of “us.” In ปัญหาเหล่านี้ล้วนแต่แก้ไขได้, ล้วนแต่ says that all the stated problems can be solved. The expression can concern an action as well as a quality.

2. Read The Exclusive Meaning
After a noun, ล้วน or ล้วนๆ can mean that only that thing is included. น้ำส้มล้วนๆ ไม่ผสมน้ำตาล describes pure orange juice with no sugar mixed in. ความพยายามล้วนๆ in the effort example presents effort as the only source named for the success. These are meanings stated by the examples.

3. Read The Complete Form
ล้วนแต่ also has the all-members meaning. The repetition mark ๆ writes the repeated form in ล้วนๆ. In the final example, ล้วน and ทั้งสิ้น both reinforce the scope of the statement. The example does not measure the form’s frequency in formal or casual speech.

4. Follow The Requested Meaning
The student task asks for นักเรียนล้วนเป็นคนเก่ง, with นักเรียน as the subject. The book task asks for a total of three books, expressed with ทั้งหมด. Do not treat the all-members predicate pattern as a rule for forming a numerical total. Compare ทุก and ต่างก็ in their own complete constructions.

Examples (5)

  1. พวกเราล้วนเป็นคนไทย

    We are all Thai people.

Word by Word: We all be person Thai

Here, ล้วน emphasizes that every single person in the group 'we' shares the identity of being Thai.

  2. น้ำส้มล้วนๆ ไม่ผสมน้ำตาล

Pure orange juice, no sugar added.

Word by Word: orange juice / pure / not / mix / sugar

ล้วนๆ describes the juice as pure, and ไม่ผสมน้ำตาล says that no sugar is mixed in. This explains the sentence’s stated meaning.

  3. ความสำเร็จนี้มาจากความพยายามล้วนๆ

This success came purely from effort.

Word by Word: Success this come from effort pure-pure

Using ล้วนๆ here suggests that no other factors (like luck) were involved; it was entirely due to effort.

  4. ปัญหาเหล่านี้ล้วนแต่แก้ไขได้

    These problems are all solvable.

Word by Word: problems / these / all / [emphasis] / solve / can

ล้วนแต่ emphasizes that every problem in this group can be solved.

  5. สิ่งที่เขาพูดมาล้วนเป็นความจริงทั้งสิ้น

Everything he said is entirely the truth.

Word by Word: Thing that he speak come all be truth all-finish

In this sentence, ล้วน and ทั้งสิ้น reinforce that the whole statement is true. Read the complete wording without inferring a fixed level of formality from this one example.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ล้วน before the noun when you mean that all the students are skilled.

    ล้วนนักเรียนเก่ง
    นักเรียนล้วนเป็นคนเก่ง

For the meaning "All the students are skilled," put the subject นักเรียน first, then ล้วน before เป็นคนเก่ง. The shown order does not express that full sentence clearly.

  • Using ล้วน to count a total number of items.

    มีหนังสือล้วนสามเล่ม
    มีหนังสือทั้งหมดสามเล่ม

ล้วน describes a shared quality or purity, not a numerical total. Use ทั้งหมด for counting totals.

To understand ล้วน, you should be comfortable with how Thai describes groups and qualities. It is most commonly seen in the construction 'ล้วน + เป็น' or 'ล้วน + Adjective' to emphasize that every single member of a group shares a specific characteristic.
