บาง
Some
Use บาง (baang) for 'some' members or instances of a group. Common combinations put it before a classifier or a time word.
How It Works
The word บาง (mid tone) is the primary way to express 'some' when referring to countable items or specific instances.
1. Word Order
In Thai, most adjectives follow the noun. However, บาง is a quantifier and behaves differently. In the common counted-noun pattern, it precedes the classifier. The full structure is usually [Noun] + บาง + [Classifier], though the noun is often dropped if the context is clear.
2. Common Combinations
- บางคน (baang khon): Some people (using the classifier for people).
- บางครั้ง (baang khrang): Sometimes (using the classifier for times).
- บางอย่าง (baang yàang): Some things / Some kinds.
3. Contrastive Nuance
Using บาง often implies a contrast. If you say 'Some people like spicy food,' the speaker may be contrasting them with other people. The phrase alone does not state that every other person dislikes it.
4. Mass Nouns
To refer to part of a larger amount, บางส่วน (baang sùan) means 'some of' or 'a portion'. Do not translate every English use of 'some' by simply adding this quantifier to a noun.
Examples (4)
- บางคนชอบเผ็ด บางคนไม่ชอบ
Some people like spicy food, some people don't.
Word by Word: some person like spicy, some person not like
This shows the distributive nature of บาง, contrasting two different groups of people.
- บางครั้งฉันก็ลืมกุญแจ
Sometimes I forget my keys.
Word by Word: some time I (particle) forget key
บางครั้ง is the standard way to say 'sometimes' in Thai.
- มีนักเรียนบางคนสอบตก
There are some students who failed the exam.
Word by Word: have student some person test fall
Here, บางคน follows the noun 'student' to specify a subset of that group.
- ผลไม้บางลูกเสียแล้ว
Some of the fruit is spoiled already.
Word by Word: fruit some (round object classifier) spoiled already
Using the classifier 'ลูก' for fruit to specify that only certain pieces are bad.
Common Mistakes
Confusing 'บาง' (mid tone) with 'บ้าง' (falling tone).
มีอะไรบาง?มีอะไรบ้าง?บาง (mid tone) means 'some/certain ones' and precedes a classifier. บ้าง (falling tone) is used at the end of questions to ask for a list or to mean 'also/some too'.
Using adjective order when you mean 'some people'.
คนบางไม่มาบางคนไม่มาTo mean 'some people' in this sentence, use บางคน. Here คน supplies the people unit after บาง. Do not use ordinary adjective order to express this meaning.
