Whole, Both, And Even Though
The examples show ทั้ง in duration, whole-book, two-person, paired-quality, and paired-food phrases. ทั้งที่ introduces the stated contrast between continued work and illness. Read each complete construction rather than assigning one position or one effect to every ทั้ง.
How It Works
1. Complete Duration and Quantity Phrases
ทั้งวัน means all day in the working example. เพื่อนทั้งสองคน identifies both friends in the displayed sequence, and หนังสือทั้งเล่ม refers to the whole book in the reading example. The unmarked verbs alone do not require past narration, and the sentences do not independently prove their claims.
2. Paired Descriptions
ผู้หญิงคนนั้นทั้งสวยทั้งเก่ง presents two qualities of that woman. เขากินทั้งผักและผลไม้ pairs vegetables and fruit as what he eats. Paired expressions do not automatically prove simultaneity, a particular degree of emphasis, or the truth of a description.
3. The Stated Contrast
เขายังทำงานอยู่ ทั้งที่ป่วย states ongoing work despite illness. Compare ทั้ง ๆ ที่ and its repetition mark in the linked entry’s own complete contexts. NIU lists ทั้งที่ and ทั้ง ๆ ที่ with even-though readings; this does not establish which is more frequent or a universal strong contradiction between known facts.
4. Keep Other Constructions Distinct
Compare รวมทั้ง, ทั้งนี้, ทั้งสิ้น, and ทั้งหมด in their own complete examples. Their lexical functions do not establish a universal formal register, one position for every compound, or that every transition means furthermore.
5. The Requested Exercises
The first task requests เขามาที่นี่ทุกวัน, coming here every day. เขามาที่นี่ทั้งวัน gives an all-day reading in a suitable context, but does not reproduce every day; it does not necessarily mean that someone stayed here without leaving. The second task requests เพื่อนทั้งสองคน, with เพื่อน followed by ทั้งสองคน. ทั้งสองเพื่อน does not reproduce that requested counting sequence. This is not a universal prohibition on every construction meaning both friends.

Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested every-day statement.
เขามาที่นี่ทั้งวันเขามาที่นี่ทุกวันThis task requests เขามาที่นี่ทุกวัน, coming here every day. เขามาที่นี่ทั้งวัน has an all-day reading in context, but does not reproduce the requested repeated-day meaning. It does not necessarily assert staying here for one entire day without leaving.
Not reproducing the requested เพื่อนทั้งสองคน sequence.
ทั้งสองเพื่อนเพื่อนทั้งสองคนThis exercise requests เพื่อนทั้งสองคน, with เพื่อน before ทั้งสองคน. ทั้งสองเพื่อน does not reproduce that displayed counting sequence. The exercise does not establish a mandatory classifier rule for every possible both phrase.
