A Dative Showing Personal Involvement

Level 6Sounds Like etički dativ

The ethical dative (етички датив) uses short dative clitics—primarily ми (to me) and ти (to you)—not to denote a real recipient, beneficiary, or owner, but to convey the speaker's emotional investment, affection, or attitude toward what is happening.

How It Works

In Serbian grammar, the ethical dative (етички датив or dativus ethicus), often described in syntax as the dative of intimacy (датив присности) or dative of interest (датив интересовања), is an expressive pragmatic tool used to signal emotional involvement, personal perspective, rapport, or vivid narration.

1. Form and Position:

  • Pronoun Forms: It is expressed almost exclusively by short clitic personal pronouns of the first and second person: ми, ти, нам, and вам (see Short Pronouns and Clitic Order). Third-person clitics (му, јој, им) cannot function as ethical datives. However, full tonic forms are not entirely absent: in highly emphatic, emotional speech—especially in warnings, threats, challenges, or traditional blessings—the tonic first-person form мени regularly functions as an affective ethical dative alongside an overt subject pronoun (e.g., Пропеваћеш ти мени! 'You'll confess / squeal to me soon enough!', Бићеш ти мени добар!, Да си ти мени жив и здрав!).
  • Clitic Placement and Constraints: Clitic ethical datives adhere to second-position rules (Clitics After the First Constituent), following the clause's initial accented constituent (e.g., Јуче ми се вратио, Шта ми радиш?). Note the following syntactic nuances:
    • Stacking constraints and narrative 'ти': Standard argument structures generally prohibit multiple argument datives. However, the discourse-level second-person ethical dative ти occupies a higher pragmatic layer and can precede a third-person argument or possessive dative clitic in colloquial narrative style (e.g., Јуче сам ти јој помогао, И тако ти му он све узме). Conversely, reversed orders (*му ти, *јој ти) and combinations like *ми ти are strictly ungrammatical (see Ordering Object Clitics).
    • Narrative 'ти' mobility: The conversational narrative clitic ти can uniquely precede verbal auxiliary clitics (e.g., Луде ти сам среће! alongside standard Луде сам ти среће!).
  • Syntactic Test: Because it is an expressive pragmatic adjunct rather than a semantic argument required by the verb frame, the ethical dative can never serve as an answer to the case questions Коме? or Чему? (Questions About Case Roles). It can be omitted entirely without changing the sentence's factual truth conditions.

2. Expressive and Narrative Functions:

  • Narrative & Attentive 'ти': In oral storytelling and lively anecdotes, second-person ти directly engages the listener's attention and draws them into the scene: Устанем ти ја јутрос рано... ('So I get up early this morning...').
  • Affection & Warm Concern: In greetings and caring questions like Како си ми?, ми conveys warmth, closeness, and heartfelt personal investment.
  • Delight & Tender Observation: In remarks such as Гледај ми га како лепо спава!, it conveys affectionate pride or fond marvel.
  • Irony, Reproach, & Dismissal: In critical or exasperated remarks, ми signals indignation, disbelief, or scornful dismissal: И то ми је неки стручњак! ('And that calls itself an expert!'), Шта ми се ту правиш важан? ('Why are you putting on airs around me?').
  • Soft Warning & Personal Plea: In directives like Немој ми бити тужан!, it appeals to emotional closeness and mutual solidarity.

3. Distinctions to Keep in Mind:

  • Do not confuse it with Possession With a Dative Clitic: Отац ми ради ('My father works') expresses actual possession, whereas Немој ми плакати ('Don't cry on me') expresses the speaker's emotional investment.
  • Do not confuse it with Affected People in the Dative: Скувао сам ти кафу conveys a concrete recipient of a service, whereas Шта ми радиш? is purely conversational engagement without material gain or loss.

4. Register and Stylistic Scope:
While the ethical dative is typical of colloquial interaction, it is also a prominent stylistic feature of traditional epic folk poetry (епска народна поезија) and literary dialogue capturing spoken idiom. It is strictly excluded from neutral administrative, legal, and formal academic writing.

Examples (4)

  1. Како си ми данас?

    How are you doing today?

Word by Word: How are [you] to-me today?

The clitic 'ми' carries no literal meaning of receiving; it adds personal warmth, concern, and closeness to an everyday greeting.

  2. Устанем ти ја јутрос рано и видим да пада снег.

So I get up early this morning and see that it is snowing.

Word by Word: Get-up to-you I this-morning early and see that falls snow.

The second-person clitic 'ти' functions purely as an ethical dative to actively hook the listener's attention during oral narration.

  3. Гледај ми га како лепо спава.

Just look at him sleeping so peacefully.

Word by Word: Look to-me him how nicely [he] sleeps.

The speaker expresses tender pride and emotional joy at the sight of the sleeping child or pet.

  4. Немој ми плакати, све ће бити у реду.

Don't cry on me, everything will be fine.

Word by Word: Don't to-me cry, all will be in order.

The clitic 'ми' appeals to emotional solidarity and comfort rather than indicating who receives the action of crying.

Common Mistakes

  • Translating the pronoun literally as an indirect object or possessive modifier.

    Како си мени?
    Како си ми?

The ethical dative is virtually never expressed by full tonic pronouns (*мени) in neutral statements; it must appear as an unstressed clitic (ми) in the clitic cluster, and it represents an attitude rather than a literal receiver ('to me').

  • Using the warm ethical dative when you greet a professor.

Different MeaningДобар дан, професоре, како сте ми?
    Добар дан, професоре, како сте?

'Како сте ми?' is correct and warm, and a teacher or an older person may well say it to you. The ethical dative shows closeness and care, so a learner greeting a professor or a stranger should use the neutral 'Како сте?'.

  • Attempting to transfer an ethical dative into indirect reported speech.

Питао ме је како му је моја мајка.
Питао ме је како је моја мајка.

The ethical dative is tied strictly to the immediate conversational exchange. It cannot mechanically convert into a 3rd-person clitic (*му) in indirect speech without sounding like an experiencer dative or becoming ungrammatical.

Learn This First

To understand and recognize the ethical dative ('етички датив'), learners must know the short dative pronoun clitic forms (primarily 'ми' and 'ти') and how they are ordered as sentence enclitics. Familiarity with non-core datives, such as the dative of benefit or detriment ('dativus commodi/incommodi'), also helps distinguish syntactic objects from emotional markers.
