в/на + Accusative (Destination)

Accusative Destination After В and На

Level 2Sounds Like v/na + vinitelʹnyj napravleniâ

The pattern в/на + Accusative is used to show movement toward a place. It answers the question Куда? (Where to?).

How It Works

This construction is the standard way to express going to a destination.

1. Choosing the Preposition:

  • в (into/to): Used for enclosed spaces, buildings, and geographic locations like cities or countries. Example: в город (to the city). Note that island nations (states) usually take в, such as в Японию (to Japan) or в Исландию (to Iceland).
  • на (onto/to): Used for surfaces, open spaces, and events (concerts, lessons). It is also used for activities and functions, such as на работу (to work) or на прогулку (for a walk).
  • Common Exceptions for на: Some buildings and locations require на by tradition: на почту (to the post office), на вокзал (to the station), на завод (to the factory), на стадион (to the stadium).
  • Geographical Islands: Most physical islands take на, such as на Кубу or на Сахалин, as do compass points: на север (to the north).

2. Case Changes (Accusative):

  • Feminine nouns: Change the ending -а/-я to -у/-ю (школа → в школу).
  • Feminine nouns in -ь: Nouns like площадь or Сибирь do not change their ending (на площадь).
  • Masculine inanimate & Neuter nouns: These do not change from their dictionary form (парк → в парк).
  • Plural Nouns: Inanimate plural nouns do not change their endings in this construction (в парки, на почты).
  • Note on People: To indicate a destination that is a person, use к + Dative (к врачу) instead of в/на.

3. Return Correspondence:
Prepositions usually work in pairs. If you go somewhere with в, you return with из (в школу → из школы). If you go with на, you return with с/со (на работу → с работы).

4. Phonological Note:
The preposition в becomes во before words starting with a 'v' or 'f' followed by another consonant (во Францию), before certain clusters like 'мн' (во мне), and in specific common phrases like во вторник (on Tuesday) or во дворе (in the yard).

Examples (5)

  1. Мы едем в город.

We are going to the city.

Word by Word: We are-traveling into city.

Uses 'в' because a city is a geographic location/enclosed area. 'Город' is masculine inanimate, so it doesn't change.

  2. Она идёт на почту.

She is going to the post office.

Word by Word: She is-walking onto post-office.

Uses 'на' because 'почта' is one of the specific institutions that requires it. The feminine ending -а changes to -у.

  3. Положи книгу на стол.

Put the book on the table.

Word by Word: Put book onto table.

Uses 'на' because the motion is directed onto a surface. 'Стол' is masculine inanimate, so it remains unchanged.

  4. Вечером я пойду на концерт.

In the evening, I will go to a concert.

Word by Word: In-evening I will-go onto concert.

Uses 'на' because a concert is an event, not just a building.

  5. Дети бегут в школу.

The children are running to school.

Word by Word: Children are-running into school.

Uses 'в' for a building. The feminine 'школа' changes to 'школу' in the accusative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Prepositional case for motion.

    Я иду в школе.
    Я иду в школу.

'В школе' means you are already inside the school walking around. To say you are 'going to school' (destination), you must use the Accusative 'в школу'.

  • Using 'в' for events or work.

    Я иду в работу.
    Я иду на работу.

Russian uses 'на' for the concept of 'work' and for events like concerts or lessons, even if they take place inside a building.

  • Forgetting to change feminine endings.

    Он едет в Москва.
    Он едет в Москву.

Feminine nouns ending in -а must change to -у when they are the destination of motion.
