на + Destination
Direction with На
The preposition на is used with the Accusative case to answer the question куда? (where to?). It is used for surfaces, events, and specific 'activity-based' locations.
How It Works
In Russian, expressing direction to inanimate destinations (places, events, or objects) requires choosing between в and на. As a baseline rule, use в for enclosed spaces, buildings, and containers (e.g., в школу - to school, в дом - into the house). In contrast, the preposition на is used for surfaces, open spaces, and events. (For traveling to people, you use к, but на is used when a person is the target of an action, like посмотреть на него - to look at him). The preposition на is paired with the Accusative case when you are moving toward a destination.
1. Physical Surfaces
If you are placing something 'onto' a surface, use на.
Example: Положи книгу на стол (Put the book on the table).
2. Events and Activities
Russian treats events as destinations for на. This includes things like работа (work), урок (lesson), and концерт (concert).
3. Open Spaces and Geography
Use на for open areas like улица (street), площадь (square), and стадион (stadium). For mountains, use на for singular mountain peaks (на Эльбрус, на Эверест) and mountain regions (на Кавказ, на Урал). However, use в for the general term 'mountains' (в горы) and for plural mountain ranges (в Альпы, в Гималаи, в Анды, в Карпаты). For islands and peninsulas, на is the default (на Кубу, на Кипр, на Мадагаскар, на Камчатку, на Аляску). There are fixed exceptions for certain island nations which strictly take в (в Исландию, в Японию).
4. Cardinal Directions
Use на for compass directions: на север (to the north), на юг (to the south), на восток (to the east), на запад (to the west).
5. Transportation
Use на when taking a route or using a public transport service: сесть на поезд (to catch a train), сесть на автобус (to catch a bus), на самолёт (to catch a plane). However, use в when emphasizing physically stepping inside the cabin of any public transport (сесть в поезд, сесть в автобус). For cars and taxis, use в when expressing the physical direction of getting inside (сесть в машину, сесть в такси).
6. Bodies of Water
When traveling to the shore or seaside of a body of water, use на: поехать на море (to go to the sea/seaside), на реку (to the river), на озеро (to the lake). If you are physically going into the water itself, use в: прыгнуть в море (to jump into the sea).
7. Exceptions and Special Cases
Some specific places traditionally take на instead of в, such as почта (post office), вокзал (train station), станция (station), завод (factory), фабрика (factory), кухня (kitchen - на кухню), балкон (balcony - на балкон), чердак (attic - на чердак), дача (dacha/summer house - на дачу), родина (homeland - на родину), этаж (floor - на первый этаж), as well as university divisions like факультет (faculty/department), кафедра (academic department), and курс (year of study). Note: Regarding Ukraine, there is a split in usage; while в Украину is widely used officially in Ukraine and internationally, на Украину remains the traditional literary norm according to Russian prescriptive authorities.
8. The 'Mirror' Rule
It is helpful to remember that if you go на a place, you come с (from) that place. If you go в a place, you come из (from) it.
9. Noun Endings
When using на for direction, the noun must change to the Accusative:
- Feminine nouns change -а to -у (работа → на работу) and -я to -ю (лекция → на лекцию). However, feminine nouns ending in a soft sign (-ь) like площадь do not change.
- Masculine inanimate nouns remain identical to their Nominative form (стол → на стол).
- Neuter nouns also remain identical to their Nominative form (море → на море).
- Inanimate plural nouns also remain identical to their Nominative form (острова → на острова).
Examples (5)
- Я иду на работу.
I am going to work.
Word by Word: I go onto work.
'Работа' is an activity/event, so it requires 'на' and the feminine accusative ending '-у'.
- Положи телефон на стол.
Put the phone on the table.
Word by Word: Put phone onto table.
Here 'на' indicates motion onto a physical surface. 'Стол' is masculine inanimate, so it doesn't change.
- Мы едем на вокзал.
We are going to the train station.
Word by Word: We go onto train-station.
'Вокзал' is one of the specific building exceptions that always uses 'на' instead of 'в'.
- Они идут на концерт.
They are going to a concert.
Word by Word: They go onto concert.
A concert is an event, which always takes 'на' for direction.
- Кот прыгнул на диван.
The cat jumped onto the sofa.
Word by Word: Cat jumped onto sofa.
Indicates motion to the top surface of the sofa.
Common Mistakes
Using the Prepositional case instead of Accusative for motion.
Я иду на работе.Я иду на работу.'На работе' means you are already there (location). For motion (direction), you must use the Accusative 'на работу'.
Using 'в' for activities or work.
Я иду в работу.Я иду на работу.Even though work might be inside a building, Russian treats 'work' as an activity, requiring 'на'.
Mixing up the 'from' prepositions.
Я иду из работы.Я иду с работы.If you go 'на' (to), you must return 'с' (from). 'Из' is only used if you went 'в'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'на + направление', a learner needs to know that the preposition 'на' requires the accusative case to indicate motion. This involves knowing the specific question for direction (куда) and the basic accusative case endings for both inanimate and feminine nouns.
- кудаWhere-to Question
The question 'куда' (where to) is the functional counterpart to this pattern, establishing the context of motion towards a destination.
Level 1 - Inanimate accusative like nominative
The pattern 'на + направление' uses the accusative case for the destination; understanding that inanimate masculine and neuter nouns remain unchanged is essential for usage.
