Entering

Level 3Sounds Like vojti / vʺehatʹ

Use войти when you walk into a room or building, or for large vehicles like trains and ships entering a space. Use въехать when you drive or ride into a space. Both are perfective, focusing on the completed act of crossing the threshold.

How It Works

The verbs войти and въехать are essential for describing the act of entering.

1. Physical Entry and Morphology:

  • войти: Used for pedestrians, as well as large vehicles or vessels (like trains entering a tunnel or ships entering a port). Morphologically, it consists of the prefix во- (a variant of в-), the root -й-, and the infinitive suffix -ти.
  • въехать: Used for vehicles (cars, bicycles). Note the mandatory hard sign (ъ) between the prefix в- and the root -ех- (with the infinitive suffix -ать). It is also commonly used to mean 'to crash into' (e.g., въехать в дерево - to crash into a tree).
  • Imperfective forms: To describe a process or a repeated action, use входить (walking) and въезжать (driving).

2. Grammatical Construction:
These verbs typically take the preposition в (or на for specific locations) followed by the Accusative case to show the direction of movement. However, they can be used without a preposition when the destination is understood from context (e.g., Можно войти? - May I come in?). When entering a space defined by a person (like a doctor's office or a boss's room), Russian uses к followed by the Dative case (e.g., войти к директору).

3. Abstract Meanings and States:
Beyond physical spaces, these verbs describe entering states, periods, or becoming part of something. Note that these abstract expressions can also be used in the imperfective aspect (e.g., входить в моду) to describe an ongoing process:

  • войти в моду: to come into fashion.
  • войти в силу: to gain physical strength, momentum, or authority (note: for laws/rules taking effect, the correct term is вступить в силу).
  • войти в привычку: to become a habit.
  • войти в историю: to go down in history.
  • войти в положение: to empathize or put oneself in someone else's shoes.
  • войти в систему / аккаунт: to log in or sign in (digital context).
  • входить в... (imperfective): to be included in or be a part of (e.g., входить в стоимость - to be included in the price, входить в состав - to be a part of).
  • въехать в квартиру: to move into a new apartment.
  • въехать (slang): to finally understand or 'get' a complex idea. This can use the в + Accusative pattern (e.g., въехать в тему - to wrap one's head around a topic), but is also frequently used without a preposition (e.g., Я вообще не въехал - I didn't get it at all).

Examples (4)

  2. Машина быстро въехала в гараж.

The car quickly drove into the garage.

Word by Word: Car quickly drove-into into garage.

We use 'въехала' because the subject is a vehicle entering an enclosed space.

  3. Мы наконец-то въехали в новую квартиру.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Prepositional case instead of the Accusative case.

    Он вошёл в комнате.
    Он вошёл в комнату.

Verbs of motion like 'войти' indicate direction, which requires the Accusative case (комнату), not the Prepositional case (комнате), which is for static location.

  • Omitting the hard sign (ъ) in 'въехать'.

    Мы вехали в город.
    Мы въехали в город.

In Russian, a hard sign is required between a prefix ending in a consonant and a root starting with e, ё, ю, or я.
