Direction with В

Level 1Sounds Like v + napravlenie

The preposition в followed by the Accusative case shows direction (where to). It is used for cities, most countries, and enclosed spaces, though some specific buildings like на почту and geographic islands like на Кипр use на instead.

How It Works

To express where you are going, use the preposition в (or во before certain consonant clusters) followed by a noun in the Accusative case.

1. When to use it:
Use this pattern when answering the question куда? (where to?). It is the standard choice for enclosed spaces, cities, and most countries. Contrast this with на, which is used for open spaces and events.

  • Cities and countries (в Москву, в Россию)
  • Buildings and rooms (в магазин, в комнату)
  • Containers or specific interiors (в стол, в сумку)
  • Events and activities take на (на работу, на концерт, на урок)

2. Important Exceptions:
Some buildings and territories use на instead of в. Common examples include на почту (to the post office), на вокзал (to the train station), на завод (to the factory), на кухню (to the kitchen), на стадион (to the stadium), на балкон (to the balcony), and на второй этаж (to the second floor). Additionally, geographic islands (на Сахалин, на Кипр, на Кубу), compass directions (на север, на юг), and mountain ranges (на Урал, на Кавказ) take на. As a helpful rule of thumb, sovereign states ending in -ия generally take в (в Японию, в Исландию, в Великобританию). For Ukraine, both на Украину (historical norm) and в Украину (modern standard emphasizing sovereignty) are used.

3. Noun Endings:

  • Feminine (-а/-я): Change -а to -у and -я to -ю (e.g., школа becomes в школу).
  • Feminine (-ь): Nouns ending in a soft sign do not change (e.g., в дверь, в Сибирь).
  • Masculine/Neuter (Inanimate): The ending does not change from the Nominative (e.g., парк stays в парк, words ending in -й or a soft sign like музей or словарь stay в музей and в словарь, and окно stays в окно).
  • Inanimate Plurals: All inanimate plural nouns remain identical to the Nominative plural (e.g., в города, в школы).

Note: When expressing movement towards a person as a destination, do not use в. Instead, use the preposition к with the Dative case (e.g., к соседу).

4. The variant 'во':
Use во instead of в if the next word starts with в or ф followed by another consonant, or before certain consonant clusters starting with л, р, or м to make it easier to pronounce (e.g., во Францию, во вторник, во Львов). There are also common set phrases that use во, such as во двор (into the yard).

Examples (5)

  1. Мы едем в Москву.

    We are going to Moscow.

Word by Word: We are-traveling to Moscow.

Moscow (Москва) is feminine, so the ending changes to -у in the Accusative to show direction.

  2. Он вошёл в магазин.

    He entered the store.

Word by Word: He entered into store.

Store (магазин) is an inanimate masculine noun, so its form remains the same as the Nominative.

  3. Положи телефон в сумку.

Put the phone into the bag.

Word by Word: Put phone into bag.

This shows motion 'into' a container, requiring the Accusative case for 'bag' (сумка -> сумку).

  4. Я иду в школу.

    I am going to school.

Word by Word: I am-walking to school.

A classic example of walking toward a destination using the Accusative case.

  5. Они летят во Францию.

    They are flying to France.

Word by Word: They are-flying to France.

The preposition 'во' is used here because 'Франция' starts with 'Ф' followed by a consonant.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Prepositional case for motion.

    Я еду в России.
    Я еду в Россию.

In Russian, 'в России' means you are already inside Russia (location). To say you are going 'to' Russia, you must use the Accusative 'в Россию'.

  • Forgetting to decline feminine nouns.

    Я иду в школа.
    Я иду в школу.

Feminine nouns ending in -а must change to -у when used with 'в' to indicate direction.

  • Using 'в' for events instead of 'на'.

    Я иду в концерт.
    Я иду на концерт.

While 'в' is for buildings and cities, 'на' is used for events, open spaces, and certain exceptions like 'work'.
