ехать / ездить

Unidirectional and Multidirectional Vehicle Travel

Level 3Sounds Like ehatʹ / ezditʹ

Russian uses two different verbs for 'to go' by vehicle: ехать (unidirectional) and ездить (multidirectional). The choice depends on whether you are moving in one specific direction right now or describing a general habit/round trip.

How It Works

In Russian, verbs of motion are categorized by the nature of the movement. When traveling by vehicle (car, bus, train, bike) or riding an animal (horse), you must choose between the ехать and ездить pair. Note that for air travel, the pair лететь / летать is used instead.

1. Ехать (Unidirectional / Determinate)
Use this verb when the movement is toward a specific goal in one direction:

  • Actions in progress: Я еду в офис. (I am [currently] driving to the office.)
  • Planned future: Завтра мы едем в Берлин. (Tomorrow we are going to Berlin.)

2. Ездить (Multidirectional / Indeterminate)
Use this verb when the movement is not limited to one direction or one specific trip:

  • Habits and Repetition: Он часто ездит на дачу. (He often goes to the country house.)
  • Round trips in the past: Вчера я ездил в центр. (Yesterday I went to the center [and came back].)
  • General ability: Ты умеешь ездить на велосипеде? (Do you know how to ride a bike?)

3. Conjugation and Grammar
Both verbs are imperfective. Note the stem changes:

  • Ехать: я еду, ты едешь, они едут (The 'х' in the infinitive stem alternates with 'д' in the present tense).
  • Ездить: я езжу, ты ездишь, они ездят (Note the 'д' to 'зж' shift in the 'я' form).
  • Imperative: The verb ехать has no standard imperative form. Instead, use the suppletive form поезжай(те).

4. Important Syntax
To express the destination, use в/на + Accusative. To express the mode of transport, use на + Prepositional (на машине, на поезде, на лошади).

Examples (5)

  1. Сейчас я еду на работу на автобусе.

Right now I am going to work by bus.

Word by Word: Now I am-going to work on bus.

Uses 'еду' because it is a specific trip happening right now in one direction.

  2. Мой друг каждый день ездит в университет на машине.

My friend goes to the university by car every day.

Word by Word: My friend every day goes to university on car.

Uses 'ездит' because it is a repeated, habitual action.

  3. Прошлым летом мы ездили в Петербург.

Last summer we went to St. Petersburg.

Word by Word: Last summer we went to Petersburg.

Uses 'ездили' to indicate a completed round trip (we went there and returned).

  4. Куда вы едете в отпуск?

Where are you going for vacation?

Word by Word: Where-to you are-going in vacation?

Uses 'едете' for a planned, specific trip to a destination.

  5. Я не люблю ездить на метро.

I don't like riding the metro.

Word by Word: I not love to-ride on metro.

Uses 'ездить' for a general statement or preference about travel.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'идти' (walking) for long distances or vehicles.

Я иду в Америку на самолёте.
Я лечу в Америку на самолёте.

When a person travels by vehicle, 'идти' (walking) does not fit. Use 'ехать' or 'ездить' for road and rail, and 'лететь' for a plane.

  • Using 'ехать' for habits.

    Я часто еду в парк.
    Я часто езжу в парк.

For repeated actions or habits, the multidirectional verb 'ездить' is required.

  • Using incorrect imperative forms like 'едь' or 'ехай'.

    Едь быстрее!
    Поезжай быстрее!

The verb 'ехать' has no standard imperative. You must use 'поезжай' (or 'поезжайте'). 'Едь' and 'ехай' are considered non-standard or incorrect.
