подойти / подъехать
Approaching
The verbs подойти and подъехать focus on the final steps of movement—closing the distance to a specific person or object.
How It Works
In Russian, movement is highly specific. While прийти / приехать mean you have arrived at a general destination, подойти and подъехать describe the act of getting physically close to a specific point within that destination.
1. Spatial Movement:
- Подойти / подходить: Used for movement on foot. Note the 'fill vowel' о in the prefix (подо-йти) to make it easier to pronounce. Use подходить for ongoing actions (Он подходит к дому).
- Подъехать / подъезжать: Used for movement by vehicle. Note the mandatory ъ (hard sign) between the prefix and the root (под-ъ-ехать). Use подъезжать for repeated actions or processes.
2. Grammar Requirements:
These verbs are perfective when focusing on the completed result of reaching proximity. They are paired with the preposition к (or ко before certain clusters like 'мне'). The target must be in the Dative case.
3. Figurative Meaning (Suitability):
The imperfective form подходить is frequently used to mean 'to fit' or 'to suit' (e.g., a time being convenient or a key fitting a lock). Это мне подходит (This suits me/This works for me). Note that for clothing, подходить refers to size or style matching, while идти is used when something looks good on a person.
Examples (4)
- Он подошёл к окну и посмотрел на улицу.
He walked up to the window and looked at the street.
Word by Word: He approached to window and looked at street.
Here, подошёл shows the specific action of walking the last few steps to the window.
- Такси подъехало к самому входу.
The taxi pulled up right to the entrance.
Word by Word: Taxi approached to very entrance.
Подъехало is used because the movement is by vehicle (a taxi).
- Подойди ко мне, пожалуйста.
Come over to me, please.
Word by Word: Approach to me, please.
The preposition к becomes ко before the pronoun мне for easier pronunciation.
- Этот ключ не подходит к замку.
This key doesn't fit the lock.
Word by Word: This key not approaches to lock.
This uses the imperfective form to express the state of 'fitting' or 'suitability'.
Common Mistakes
Using the preposition 'в' (into) or 'на' (onto) instead of 'к'.
Я подошёл в кассу.Я подошёл к кассе.Подойти describes approaching the exterior or proximity of something, not entering it. Always use 'к' + Dative.
Forgetting the hard sign (ъ) in подъехать.
Машина подьехала.Машина подъехала.In Russian, a hard sign is required when a prefix ending in a consonant (под-) meets a root starting with an iotated vowel (е).
