Imperfective aspect for ongoing action

Level 2Sounds Like nesoveršennyj vid processa

The несовершенный вид (imperfective aspect) focuses on the process of an action rather than its result. It answers the question 'What were you doing?' (Что ты делал?) and is used for actions in progress at a specific moment.

How It Works

The concrete-processual meaning (конкретно-процессное значение) is one of the most common uses of the несовершенный вид. It treats an action as a continuous flow.

Key characteristics include:

  • Specific Moment: Describing what is happening at this very second or what was happening at a specific time in the past (e.g., 'At 5 PM, I was reading').
  • Duration: Emphasizing how long an action lasted using words like долго (long time), весь день (all day), or два часа (two hours).
  • Simultaneity: Describing two or more processes happening at the same time (e.g., 'I was reading while he was sleeping').
  • Background Action: In stories, the imperfective sets the scene (the фон) while a совершенный вид verb interrupts it with a sudden event.

Morphologically, these verbs are either basic stems (читать, идти) or formed via suffixes like -ыва-/-ива-, -ва-, or -а-/-я-. Note that the present tense in Russian is always imperfective because an action happening now is by definition a process.

Examples (5)

  1. Вчера в пять часов я читал книгу.

Yesterday at five o'clock I was reading a book.

Word by Word: Yesterday at five hours I read [was reading] book.

The imperfective 'читал' is used because the focus is on the action in progress at a specific point in time (5:00).

  2. Она долго писала это письмо.

She was writing this letter for a long time.

Word by Word: She long wrote [was writing] this letter.

The word 'долго' (long) signals that we are focusing on the duration of the process, requiring the imperfective.

  3. Когда мы шли домой, начался дождь.

While we were walking home, it started to rain.

Word by Word: When we went [were walking] home, started rain.

The imperfective 'шли' provides the background process, while the perfective 'начался' marks the sudden completed event.

  4. Что ты сейчас делаешь? — Я пью кофе.

What are you doing now? — I am drinking coffee.

Word by Word: What you now do? — I drink coffee.

Actions happening in the present moment are always expressed with the imperfective aspect.

  5. Пока я готовил ужин, жена смотрела телевизор.

While I was cooking dinner, my wife was watching TV.

Word by Word: While I prepared [was preparing] dinner, wife watched [was watching] television.

The imperfective is used for simultaneous actions where two processes occur at the same time.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the perfective aspect when emphasizing duration.

    Я прочитал книгу два часа.
    Я читал книгу два часа.

If you mention how long an action took (duration), you must use the imperfective. The perfective 'прочитал' focuses on the result, which contradicts the focus on the 'two hours' spent doing it.

  • Using a perfective verb to say you are writing right now.

    Different MeaningЯ сейчас напишу письмо.
    Я сейчас пишу письмо.

«Я сейчас напишу письмо» is correct, but it means 'I will write the letter right now'. Perfective verbs have no present tense. To say you are in the middle of writing, use the imperfective: «Я сейчас пишу письмо».
