بروم / بروی / برود

The Present Subjunctive

Level 3

رفتن → رو → بروم. Compare می‌روم (I go) with باید بروم (I must go).

How It Works

Build a regular form. Start with the learned present stem, add بـ, and add the person ending. With رو, the written forms are بروم، بروی، برود، برویم، بروید، بروند. The short vowel in the prefix varies with the verb; ordinary spelling usually does not show it.

Negate the action. Replace the affirmative prefix with نـ: بروم → نروم. Keep the person ending. Do not add می‌ when the construction calls for this subjunctive.

Compare a command. برو! tells one familiar person to go. بروی includes the second-person ending and belongs in a construction such as می‌خواهم بروی. The two forms serve different jobs.

Learn exceptions and compounds. Some verbs use different forms, such as باشم. In many compounds with کردن, forms such as کمک کنم occur without بـ. Learn the full construction rather than adding a prefix to every word.

Everyday Iranian speech. Written بروم، بروی، برود commonly correspond to spoken برم، بری، بره. These are labeled spoken forms, not replacements for the written forms in formal prose.

Examples (4)

  1. باید امروز بروم.

    I must go today.

  2. می‌خواهی با هم برویم؟

  3. شاید فردا بیاید.

    Perhaps they will come tomorrow.

بیاید is a written third-person form; او and its verb do not specify gender.
