باید بروم / نباید بروم

Must and Must Not

Level 3

باید + بروم / بروی / برود. To say there is no need, use a clear phrase such as لازم نیست بروم.

How It Works

Who must act? The ending on the second verb supplies the person: باید بخوانم (I must read), باید بخوانی (you must read), and باید بخوانیم (we must read). A subject pronoun can be added when the actor needs emphasis or clarification.

Must not. نباید اینجا پارک کنید tells the listener not to park here. It does not mean that parking is merely unnecessary.

Do not have to. For no obligation, لازم نیست بیایی clearly says that coming is not necessary. Keep this distinction in translations and short hints.

Negating the following action. باید فراموش نکنم means I must not forget. This places the requirement over a negative action. The whole sentence determines the scope.

Time and strength. Context distinguishes a rule from advice. Past-shaped constructions and deductions such as باید رسیده باشد are separate topics; the present pattern alone does not teach their full meaning.

Examples (4)

  1. باید این نامه را امروز بنویسم.

I must write this letter today.

  2. نباید اینجا پارک کنید.

    You must not park here.

This is a prohibition, not permission to skip parking.

  3. لازم نیست فردا بیایی.

You do not have to come tomorrow.

    The action is not required.

  4. باید فراموش نکنم.

    I must not forget.

The required action is not forgetting.
