Hopes with the Subjunctive

امیدوارم + (که) + بیاید = I hope they come.

How It Works

Separate the people. In امیدوارم سارا بیاید, the speaker hopes and Sara would come. The ـم on امیدوارم belongs to the speaker; the ـد on بیاید belongs to Sara.

Choose the hoped-for form. Compare امیدوارم جواب بدهد with a factual statement such as جواب می‌دهد. A hope does not itself say that the event is happening or will certainly happen.

State and possession. Use forms such as باشد and داشته باشد for a hoped-for state or possession. A negative hope can place negation on the following verb: امیدوارم دیر نرسیم.

Written and everyday Iranian forms. A casual message may use امیدوارم زود خوب بشی; standard written prose has امیدوارم زود خوب شوی. Label the spoken reduction rather than treating it as a spelling error.
