Future Perfect
The future perfect says that something will already be done at a time in the future.
How It Works
| Person | aver + participle | èsser + participle |
|---|---|---|
| ieu | aurai acabat | serai partit (partida) |
| tu | auràs acabat | seràs partit (partida) |
| el, ela | aurà acabat | serà partit (partida) |
| nosautres | aurem acabat | serem partits (partidas) |
| vosautres | auretz acabat | seretz partits (partidas) |
| eles, elas | auràn acabat | seràn partits (partidas) |
The future perfect looks ahead to a moment and says that an action will be over by then. It often goes with a time word or with quand and the future: Quand arribaretz, aurem ja manjat. (When you arrive, we will have already eaten.)
As in the other compound tenses, the participle of an aver verb does not change, and the participle of an èsser verb agrees with the subject.
Examples (5)
- Aurai acabat lo trabalh deman.
I will have finished the work tomorrow.
Aurai acabat: the future of aver and the participle.
- Quand arribaretz, aurem ja manjat.
When you arrive, we will have already eaten.
Quand and the future, then the future perfect.
- Deman a miègjorn, Joan serà partit.
By noon tomorrow, Joan will have left.
Serà partit: èsser, with the participle in the masculine singular.
- Dins un an, Maria aurà acabat sos estudis.
In a year, Maria will have finished her studies.
Aurà acabat: aver, so the participle stays the same.
- Los obrièrs auràn acabat abans l'ivèrn.
The workers will have finished before winter.
Auràn acabat: the plural of the helper, with no change in the participle.
Common Mistakes
Choosing the wrong helper for a verb of movement
Joan aurà vengut abans nosautres.Joan serà vengut abans nosautres.Venir takes èsser, so the future perfect is serà vengut.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The future perfect combines the future of aver or èsser with a participle, so serai and aurai and the compound past come first.
