Feminine Adjectives

Level 1

An adjective takes a feminine ending when it describes a feminine noun.

How It Works

An adjective has the gender of the noun it describes. To make the feminine, most adjectives add -a to the masculine form. This works beside the noun (una cadièra blava) and after es (La cadièra es blava.).

Watch the spelling. After -u the feminine ends in -va (blau, blava), and the accent of a final -és disappears (francés, francesa). Learn each feminine next to its masculine. Adjectives that end in -e follow their own pattern.

Examples (4)

  1. La dròlla es contenta.

    The girl is happy.

Contenta takes -a because dròlla is feminine.

  2. La pòrta es granda.

    The door is big.

Granda is the feminine of grand.

  3. La cadièra es blava.

    The chair is blue.

    Blau becomes blava.

  4. Maria es francesa.

    Maria is French.

Francés loses its accent in francesa.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    La pòrta es blau.
    La pòrta es blava.

Pòrta is feminine, so the adjective needs its feminine form, blava.
