Dates

Level 3

A date gives the day, then de and the month: lo dètz de març.

How It Works

The months are genièr, febrièr, març, abril, mai, junh, julhet, agost, setembre, octòbre, novembre and decembre.

The pattern never changes: lo quinze de decembre. Before a month that starts with a vowel, de drops its vowel: lo sièis d'agost, lo trenta d'octòbre, lo quinze d'abril.

The first day is lo primièr: lo primièr de mai. For the year, add de again: lo primièr de març de 2025.

To name the weekday first, put it before the date: Dimenge, lo dètz de març.

The day can be written with figures or in words: lo 16 d'abril and lo setze d'abril are both normal.

Examples (5)

  1. Uèi es lo quinze d'abril.

Today is the fifteenth of April.

D'abril is de plus abril, with the elision.

  2. Deman es lo primièr de mai.

Tomorrow is the first of May.

The first day is primièr, not un.

  3. Lo tren partís lo sièis d'agost.

The train leaves on the sixth of August.

Lo sièis d'agost gives the date after the verb.

  4. Las vacanças començan lo dètz de julhet.

The holidays begin on the tenth of July.

Lo dètz de julhet is a date with no elision.

  5. Marta arriba lo trenta d'octòbre.

Marta arrives on the thirtieth of October.

D'octòbre drops the vowel of de.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying un for the first day.

    Es lo un de març.
    Es lo primièr de març.

The first day of the month is primièr.

  • Leaving out de before the month.

    Es lo dètz març.
    Es lo dètz de març.

De links the day and the month.
