Wishing Things Were Different

Level 4Sounds Like ē hunthyō

-ए हुन्थ्यो means I wish.

How It Works

This pattern says that you would like something to be different. The thing wished for goes in the -ए form, and हुन्थ्यो ends the sentence. The ending हुन्थ्यो does not change with the doer.

(I wish you came too.)
(I wish it did not rain today.)
(I wish Father would come home soon.)

With a thing or a state, use

The wish can be about the present or about something that has not happened yet. For a past regret, the -एको भए ... -थ्यो pattern fits better.

Examples (5)

I wish you would come too.

आए is the stem + -ए.

I wish it would not rain today.

The negative न- joins the verb.

I wish I could speak Nepali well too.

आए here is from आउनु, to know a skill.

I wish Father would come home soon.

-नुभए is the polite -ए form.

I wish this road were a little shorter.

भए works with a describing word.

Common Mistakes

  • A learner uses the present ending before हुन्थ्यो.

The wish needs the -ए form.
