Otherwise in Formal Writing

Level 6Sounds Like an'yathā

अन्यथा means otherwise: it follows an instruction and says what happens if people do not follow it.

How It Works

अन्यथा is the formal otherwise. It comes after the thing that should be done and it begins the clause that says what happens if it is not.

In notices it follows a request: नियम पालना गर्नुहोस्, अन्यथा जरिबाना लाग्नेछ. The first part is a command and the second part is the warning.

It can also look back. उनले कुरा बुझे, अन्यथा झगडा बढ्थ्यो means he understood, otherwise the quarrel would have grown. The habitual past -थ्यो shows what would have happened.

Put a comma before अन्यथा. The result clause usually has the future -नेछ or the passive.
