नत्र means or else.

How It Works

नत्र links a request or a plan with the problem that happens if it is not followed. The word joins two clauses with a comma between them:

  • छिटो जानुहोस्, नत्र बस छुट्छ।
  • छाता लैजाऊ, नत्र भिज्छौ।
  • अहिले नै खानुहोस्, नत्र खाना चिसो हुन्छ।

The first clause is often a command, but it can also be a plan or a statement. The result clause usually uses a present verb, and it agrees with its own doer.

नत्र is one word. Use नत्र when you warn someone. It also follows a plan or a promise: म भोलि चाँडै उठ्छु, नत्र बस छुट्छ (I will get up early tomorrow, otherwise I miss the bus).

Examples (5)

  1. छिटो जानुहोस्, नत्र बस छुट्छ।

    Go quickly, otherwise you will miss the bus.

    नत्र introduces the bad result.

  2. छाता लैजाऊ, नत्र भिज्छौ।

    Take an umbrella, otherwise you will get wet.

    भिज्छौ agrees with तिमी.

  3. अहिले नै खानुहोस्, नत्र खाना चिसो हुन्छ।

    Eat now, otherwise the food will get cold.

    नत्र follows a polite command.

  4. गृहकार्य गर, नत्र शिक्षक रिसाउनुहुन्छ।

    Do your homework, otherwise the teacher will be angry.

    The result uses the polite form.

  5. ज्याकेट लगाऊ, नत्र चिसो लाग्छ।

    Put on a jacket, otherwise you will feel cold.

    नत्र ends the warning.
