How It Works

जरी … तरी, from Level 4, is the everyday way to say although. यद्यपि … तथापि is the same idea in a more formal voice, the voice of reports, speeches and literature.

Neither word changes for gender or number. Each verb agrees as it would in a clause of its own: with the subject, or with the object in a past action with -ने, as in वाटचाल पूर्ण केली.

The first clause gives a fact that points one way: the road was hard, the project was late. The second clause gives the outcome that goes the other way.

A comma separates the clauses. तथापि starts the second clause and does not move: यद्यपि प्रकल्पाला विलंब झाला, तथापि त्याची गुणवत्ता उत्तम राहिली.

तथापि alone also works as a sentence opener, meaning however, and is listed with परंतु in Level 5. With यद्यपि it forms the full pair.

Keep the pair in formal registers. A chat message or a spoken sentence with यद्यपि sounds like a speech.

    The pair states a result that continues in spite of the change.

  3. यद्यपि प्रकल्पाला विलंब झाला, तथापि त्याची गुणवत्ता उत्तम राहिली.

    Although the project was delayed, its quality stayed excellent.

    तथापि begins the second clause.

  4. यद्यपि ती कलाकार म्हणून प्रसिद्ध झाली, तथापि तिचा साधेपणा कायम राहिला.

    Although she became famous as an artist, her simplicity stayed the same.

    The two clauses have different subjects, and each verb agrees with its own.

  5. यद्यपि आपण सर्व प्रयत्न केले, तथापि अपेक्षित यश मिळाले नाही.

    Although we made every effort, the expected success was not achieved.

    तथापि introduces a negative outcome.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi फिर भी in the second clause.

    यद्यपि मार्ग कठीण होता, फिर भी वारकऱ्यांनी वाटचाल पूर्ण केली.
    यद्यपि मार्ग कठीण होता, तथापि वारकऱ्यांनी वाटचाल पूर्ण केली.

    फिर भी is Hindi. Marathi pairs यद्यपि with तथापि.
