दिवसभर / रात्रभर
All Day or All Night
-भर also works with places: शहरभर means all over the city.
How It Works
Join -भर to the end of a plain time word. दिवसभर पाऊस होता. (It rained all day.)
| Word | With -भर |
|---|---|
| दिवस | दिवसभर, all day |
| रात्र | रात्रभर, all night |
| आठवडा | आठवडाभर, all week |
| महिना | महिनाभर, all month |
| वर्ष | वर्षभर, all year |
| शहर | शहरभर, all over the city |
The word before -भर stays plain, with no ending added. A man who could not sleep says रात्रभर मी जागा होतो. A woman who spent a month in Kolhapur says मी महिनाभर कोल्हापुरात होते.
With a place word, -भर tells where something spread: सणाचा उत्साह शहरभर दिसत होता. (The festive spirit could be seen all over the city.)
The sentence often uses a progressive or होता for the stretch of time: दिवसभर पाऊस पडत होता. A task can lead to a result: रात्रभर अभ्यास करून मी थकलो. (A man says he got tired after studying all night.) The words सारा दिवस mean the same as दिवसभर.
Write -भर joined. The time word and -भर make one word, so दिवस भर with a space is wrong.
