Each pair comes from a question word: कुठे gives जिथे and तिथे, and कधी gives जेव्हा and तेव्हा.

How It Works

These pairs join a clause that gives a place or a time to a main clause.

The जिथे or जेव्हा clause usually comes first: जिथे तू राहतोस, तिथे मी येईन. (I will come to the place where you live.) A comma goes between them.

The tense of each clause follows its own action. जेव्हा ती आली, तेव्हा मी वाचत होते. (When she arrived, I was reading.) The first clause is a past event, and the main clause is something that was going on.

With a habit in the present, both clauses use the present: जेव्हा पाऊस पडतो, तेव्हा आम्ही घरी राहतो. (When it rains, we stay home.)

Repeat the words to say whenever: जेव्हा जेव्हा … तेव्हा तेव्हा. The doubled forms have their own entry.

The main clause can also start with a plain word like मग or नंतर, but तेव्हा is the usual partner of जेव्हा. Learners often leave out तिथे and तेव्हा in speech, and the sentence still works. Writing them gives a clear, complete sentence.

    When I arrived, everyone was asleep. A man is speaking.

    जेव्हा … तेव्हा pairs the two times; पोहोचलो shows a man is speaking.

  2. जिथे तू राहतोस, तिथे मी येईन.

    I will come to the place where you live. A man is being addressed.

    जिथे … तिथे pairs the two places; राहतोस shows the listener is a man.

  3. जेव्हा पाऊस पडतो, तेव्हा आम्ही घरी राहतो.

    When it rains, we stay home.

    Both clauses are in the present for a habit.

  4. जिथे गर्दी असते, तिथे मला भीती वाटते.

    Where there is a crowd, I feel afraid.

    तिथे answers जिथे.

  5. जेव्हा ती आली, तेव्हा मी वाचत होते.

    When she arrived, I was reading. A woman is speaking.

    वाचत होते shows a woman is speaking.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi pair जब … तब.

    जब पाऊस पडतो, तब आम्ही घरी राहतो.
    जेव्हा पाऊस पडतो, तेव्हा आम्ही घरी राहतो.

    Marathi uses जेव्हा … तेव्हा.

  • Mixing a time word with a place word.

    जेव्हा मी पोहोचलो, तिथे सगळे झोपले होते.
    जेव्हा मी पोहोचलो, तेव्हा सगळे झोपले होते.

    A time word needs a time word: जेव्हा goes with तेव्हा.
