Verbs with -ईल in the future take -ईपर्यंत, and verbs with -ेल take -ेपर्यंत.

How It Works

This pattern turns an event into a time limit. तो येईपर्यंत means “until he comes”.

Verbs whose stem ends in a vowel (ये, जा, घे, हो) take -ईपर्यंत. Verbs whose stem ends in a consonant (थांब, कर, जेव) take -ेपर्यंत. A stem in ह follows its written future (राहील, पाहील) and takes -ीपर्यंत.

The first clause has its own doer: आई स्वयंपाक करेपर्यंत मी अभ्यास करतो. The form is always the third-person singular, even when several people act: सगळे जेवेपर्यंत.

The main clause can sit in any tense: a request (थांब), a plan (बसू) or a past event (गप्पा मारल्या).

-पर्यंत after a time word means “until” too: संध्याकाळपर्यंत (until evening) and सात वाजेपर्यंत (until seven o'clock, where वाजे is the clock word that comes from वाजणे). The verb pattern here works with an event.

The main clause can be a ban: तो येईपर्यंत जाऊ नकोस. (Don't leave until he comes.) It can also be a request to a group: मी तिकिटे आणेपर्यंत तुम्ही सगळे इथेच थांबा.

    थांबेपर्यंत comes from थांबेल.

  3. आई स्वयंपाक करेपर्यंत मी अभ्यास करतो.

    I study until Mom finishes cooking. A man is speaking.

    करेपर्यंत has आई as its doer.

  4. ट्रेन येईपर्यंत आम्ही गप्पा मारल्या.

    We chatted until the train came.

    The main clause is in the past.

  5. सगळे जेवेपर्यंत मी थांबले.

    I waited until everyone had eaten. A woman is speaking.

    जेवेपर्यंत stays singular even though सगळे is plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the -ल of the future.

    तो येईलपर्यंत थांब.
    तो येईपर्यंत थांब.

    Drop the -ल before -पर्यंत.

  • Dropping the vowel from the stem.

    तो येपर्यंत थांब.
    तो येईपर्यंत थांब.

    The stem of येणे takes -ईपर्यंत.
