खुआएब / देखाएब

Making Someone Do Something

Level 4Sounds Like khu'ā'ēba ā dēkhā'ēba

A longer verb form means causing another person to do the action.

How It Works

Many verbs have a second form that means "make or let someone do it". The new verb needs a new doer: the person who is made to eat or see, who takes केँ.

Basic verbLonger verbMeaning
खाएबखुआएबfeed
पीबपिआएबgive to drink
देखबदेखाएबshow
सुतबसुताएबput to sleep
  • The vowel in the middle often changes: खा becomes खुआ, पी becomes पिआ.
  • Joining forms end in -आ: खुआ, पिआ, देखा, सुता. They combine with दिअ, देलनि and the like.
  • In the past it takes -औल- and the object-verb endings: देखौलक for a plain doer, देखौलनि for a respected one.

Use केँ for the person who receives it: बच्चा केँ खुआ दिअ (feed the child). A second, longer form with -बाएब means having someone else do a job; that is the next entry.

Examples (5)

  1. बच्चा केँ खुआ दिअ।

    Please feed the child.

खुआ is the joining form of खुआएब, and दिअ asks for the action to be done.

  2. हम अहाँ केँ फोटो देखाएब।

I will show you the photo.

देखाएब is the longer form of देखब.

  3. दादी नेना केँ सुता देलनि।

Grandma put the child to sleep.

सुता is the longer form of सुतब, with देलनि for the respectful past.

  4. माय बउआ केँ दूध पिआ देलनि।

Mother gave the little boy his milk to drink.

पिआ is the longer form of पीब.

  5. काका हमरा गाम देखा देलनि।

Uncle showed me around the village.

देखा देलनि means he showed it to me.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a Hindi form for the longer verb.

    बच्चा केँ खिला दिअ।
    बच्चा केँ खुआ दिअ।

Maithili has its own खुआ; the Hindi खिला is not used.
