-ि कऽ

Linking Actions with कऽ

Level 3Sounds Like ̔i ka̕

Add -ि and then कऽ to say one action is done before the next.

How It Works

Most consonant stems add -ि: बैसि, पढ़ि, देखि, आबि. Verbs that end in a vowel keep their stem: जा, खा. A few change: कर becomes कऽ, हो becomes भऽ, दे becomes दऽ, ले becomes लऽ.

VerbJoining formWith कऽ
बैसबबैसिबैसि कऽ
पढ़बपढ़िपढ़ि कऽ
जाएबजाजा कऽ
करबकऽकऽ कऽ
होएबभऽभऽ कऽ

The last verb carries the tense and the respect ending: ओ पढ़ि कऽ गेलाह (He read and then left).

The avagraha ऽ is part of the spelling of कऽ. Keep it.

कऽ also shows how something is done. चलि कऽ जाउ means "Go on foot." The same pattern joins the actions in a row: उठि कऽ, नहा कऽ, खा कऽ.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi के.

    बैसि कऽ चाह पिबैत छथि।

के is the Hindi word. Maithili writes कऽ, with the avagraha.
