-ि लेब
Compound Verbs with लेब
लेब after another verb shows the action is done for yourself.
How It Works
Use the joining form plus a form of लेब.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| Past, हम | खा लेलहुँ |
| Past, respected | सुति लेलनि |
| Past, plain | कीनि लेलक |
| Command, polite | लिखि लिअ |
The action comes back to the doer. भात खा लेलहुँ means I ate for myself and I am done. नाम लिखि लिअ means "Write down the name for yourself."
Compare the pair:
- -ि देब: for someone else. चिट्ठी लिखि देलहुँ.
- -ि लेब: for yourself. चिट्ठी लिखि लेलहुँ.
Some verbs often use लेब, such as बुझि लिअ (understand it) and सुति लेलहुँ (I slept a while). The helper verb often adds a little feeling that you have finished or had enough.
Hindi uses लिया in the same way: खा लिया. Maithili says खा लेलहुँ.
