देखने छी
Have Done: The Perfect with -ने
Verbs that take an object make the perfect with -ने plus "to be".
How It Works
Take the verb stem, add -ने, then add the present of "to be". The -ने form stays the same for every subject.
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| हम, अहाँ | देखने छी |
| तोँ | देखने छह |
| ओ (respected) | देखने छथि |
| ओ (plain) | देखने अछि |
Other examples: पढ़ने (पढ़ब), कहने (कहब), कएने (करब). A joining form with a helper verb works the same way: कऽ देने अछि.
Maithili has no ergative ने in the past. Hindi says "मैंने फिल्म देखी" and the verb agrees with the object. In Maithili the subject stays plain: हम फिल्म देखलहुँ. The -ने in this pattern is a verb ending, not a marker on the subject, and it comes after the verb.
Negative: नहि before the verb. हम ई फिल्म नहि देखने छी means "I have not seen this film."
Examples (5)
- हम ई फिल्म देखने छी।
I have seen this film.
देखने छी: stem देख + -ने + छी.
- ई काज के कएने अछि?
Who has done this work?
कएने अछि: the plain form of करब with अछि.
- माय सभ बात कहने छथि।
Mother has told everything.
कहने छथि: a respected subject takes छथि.
- अहाँ चिट्ठी पढ़ने छी?
Have you read the letter?
पढ़ने छी: the question keeps the same order.
- ओ नहि देखने अछि।
He has not seen it.
नहि comes before the verb.
Common Mistakes
Using the Hindi "is" word after the verb.
हम ई फिल्म देखने है।हम ई फिल्म देखने छी।है is Hindi. Use छी, छथि or अछि.
Putting the Hindi ने on the subject.
हमने ई फिल्म देखने छी।हम ई फिल्म देखने छी।Maithili does not add ने to the subject. The -ने belongs to the verb.
