-ए लागब

Starting to Do Something

Level 3Sounds Like ē lāgaba

The verb with -ए and then लागब means "began to do".

How It Works

The -ए form is the same one used before पड़ब, देब and चाहब: कानए, गाबए, चलए, पढ़ए, हँसए.

SubjectPast of लागब
हमलगलहुँ
ओ (respected man)लगलाह
ओ (respected woman)लगलीह
ओ (plain)लागल

Use it for sudden starts and for things that are beginning: गाड़ी चलए लागल (The train began to move), नेना चलए लागल अछि (The baby has started walking).

The -ए form never takes an ending of its own. Only लागब changes.

Do not mix it up with the -ैत form. कनैत लागल is not a pattern. For a continuing action, use रहल: कानि रहल अछि.

Hindi uses लगा: रोने लगा. Maithili says कानए लागल.
