Definitions with Оној Што

Level 6Sounds Like onoǰ što vo definicii

Definitions and sayings often begin with оној што (the one who, whoever): Оној што сака да учи, ќе најде време. (Whoever wants to learn will find time.)

How It Works

A kind of person, not one person. In тоа што and оној што you met оној што for a person you can point at: Таа е онаа што ми помогна. In definitions, rules and sayings, the same words mean anyone who:

  • Оној што сака да учи, ќе најде време. (Whoever wants to learn will find time.)
  • Учител е оној што ги учи другите. (A teacher is someone who teaches others.)

Choose the form. Use оној што for a man or for people in general, онаа што for a woman, and оние што for a group. The verb in the clause agrees with it: оној што чита, оние што читаат. Тој што, таа што and тие што are also common, and dictionaries often write definitions this way: земјоделец is тој што ја обработува земјата.

The present tense for all time. The clause is usually in the present, because it describes what is always true. The main clause can be in the present or the future: Оние што многу читаат, знаат многу зборови. Оној што сака да учи, ќе најде време.

A second тој for weight. Sayings often repeat the person with тој at the start of the main clause: Оној што лаже, тој и краде. (Whoever lies also steals.) It adds weight, and you can leave it out.

Кој on its own. Many old sayings use just кој in the same meaning: Кој рано рани, две среќи граби. (The early bird catches the worm.) For "whoever it may be", with и да, see whoever and whatever.

Things and places. For a thing, use она што or нешто што; for a place, use место каде што: Пекара е место каде што се продава леб. (A bakery is a place where bread is sold.) For more pairs of this kind, see correlative clauses.

The comma. When the оној што clause opens the sentence, writers usually put a comma after it, before the main verb: Оној што сака да учи, ќе најде време.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the verb singular after оние што.

Оние што сака да учи, ќе најдат време.
Оние што сакаат да учат, ќе најдат време.

Оние што means "those who", so the verbs in the clause must be plural too.

  • Using што alone for a person.

Што сака да учи, ќе најде време.
Оној што сака да учи, ќе најде време.

Што alone cannot stand for a person here. Put оној or тој before it, or use кој on its own.
