უ- (For Someone)

Doing Something for Someone

Level 4Sounds Like u

The version vowel უ- shows that you do the action for someone else or to them.

How It Works

უ- (u-) is the version vowel for someone else. The person the action is for, or to, goes in the dative.

For whomExample
him, her or them: (I bought my brother a book.)
(Mom made me khachapuri.)
you: გ- + ი-საჩუქარი გიყიდე. (I bought you a present.)
(Nino made us dinner.)

Buying shows all three choices: ვიყიდე (I bought it, with no one else named), ვუყიდე (I bought it for him or her) and გიყიდე (I bought it for you).

The person who gets the thing is dative. The thing itself follows the usual pattern: dative in the present group, nominative in the past group. (I'm writing grandma a letter) has two datives, but in ძმას წიგნი ვუყიდე the book is nominative.

Examples (5)

I'm writing a letter to grandma.

In the present, both objects are dative.

    Mom made me khachapuri.

    For me: მ- + ი-.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ი- when the thing is for someone else.

A person in the dative needs უ-: ვუყიდე. With ვიყიდე, say დედისთვის (for mom) instead.

  • Using უ- for me.

For me, use მ- with ი-.
